Seeking information on Rev. William M Murtaugh who served the Sheffield area from 1888 to 1930. He was a Roman Catholic priest ordained by the Bishop of Peoria and served many communities in the area until his death in Feb 1930 in Sheffield. Seeking any information about his life and burial location in Sheffield. Any assistance will be appreciated by the descendants of Rev. Murtaugh's father's family.

Sheffield is in Bureau County & still part of the Peoria Diocese. Here is a local news article from the Bureau County Republican: SHEFFIELD — A committee in the Peoria Diocese has recommended the merger of St. Patrick’s Church in Sheffield into St. Anthony’s in Atkinson, and closure of the church building by July 2014.
But the decision is not final.
“No final decisions have been made, and all members of the cluster team ask the faithful of each parish to keep an open mind, enthusiastically continue the good work and support they are giving to their parish, and pray that the Holy Spirit will help everyone, most especially our bishop during the coming weeks and months,” said the Rev. Tony Lee, priest at. St. Anthony’s.
Parishes through the diocese are in the process of an eight-step restructuring process called Growing in Faith Together, which began in August 2011. In the first step of the process, the parishes, including the communities of Geneseo, Atkinson, Annawan and Sheffield, formed clusters to conduct a process of self-study and review of each parish.
The BUREAU COUNTY GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY has a list of the Cemeteries and their indexes as well as card index files on surnames found in their newspapers. They also archive the newspapers on microfilm. They would probably be your fastest approach.
In addition, I think I would write directly to the Peoria Archdiocese and ask if they have any literature or documents on him. I was able to get quite a bit on one of my relatives from a different Diocese.
