John was the father of Oliver Howlett.
Here is more info on John:
John Howlett was born in Meshingham Lincoln, England. He came to New York, on to Michigan, then on to Portland, Illinois, Whiteside County, via boat on the Rock River. He settled on 80 acres at Thomas, Illinois, in Bureau County, 1851.
He was in the Civil War in 1865, January - December in Vo12, page 664 of the Roll of Honor Deceased Ex Service men and women at the Sterling Library, Sterling, Illinois. He was a Calvaryman, rode a mule. His rank Private, Co. B. 9th Calvary. Ivan (Spike) Howlett has the discharge papers.

Page 17- ...Coming from England were John and Ruhama Howlett. Their first home was a 1 1/2 story log house. They built a pole barn and used slough grass for the roof. They raised a family of 12 children. A grandaughter, Mrs. John W. Thomas still lives on the farm; a great-grandaughter and her husband, Mr. and Mrs. Ted Wiseman farm the land. Other descendents are Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Rogers.
