Howard W. Ackeberg, 86, Mesa, Ariz., died Tuesday, Aug. 12, 2008, in Mesa.
Memorial services will be 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 16, at Mariposa Gardens Cemetery Chapel, 6747 E. Broadway Road, Mesa. The family will receive friends from 9 a.m. until time of services. In lieu of flowers, donations will be given to "Hospice of The Valley" and the Sunland Village Horseshoe Club.
Howard farmed in Tampico until he moved to Mesa in 1989. He loved the Lord and served as a leader at Tampico Church of Christ. He was a volunteer firefighter in Tampico for 38 years. Since moving to Mesa he was a member of the Sunland Village Horseshoe Club, competing in many local tournaments and the Senior Olympics. He enjoyed helping his neighbors, golfing, woodworking and caring for his roses and fruit trees. He enjoyed most the time he shared with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren who affectionately called him "Papa How."
He is survived by Thera, his wife of 63 years. Other survivors include son, Kenyon (Teresa) Ackeberg, Phoenix, Ariz.; daughter, Connie (Stan) Endicott, Irvine, Calif.; sister, Dorothy (Sam) Moose, Moline; six grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. F.F. Ackeberg; and brother, Marvin.
