SARAH A. SMITH ANSWERED CALL
Mrs. Sarah Smith, 93, a well known and highly respected lady of this community, passed away Monday morning at her home after a three months illness. Up until that time she had enjoyed exceptionally good health for one of her years.
Funeral services were held at 2:30 Wednesday afternoon in the Baptist church following a short prayer service in the home. Rev. Vernon Gibb conducted the service, delivering a short message on the theme "Words of Comfort" using the fourth chapter of 1st Thessalonians for his text.
Mrs. Maynard Peterson and Miss Darlene Mickley sang "Asleep in Jesus" accompanied by Mrs. Neva Denison. There were many beautiful flowers.
Burial was in the Tampico Memorial cemetery with Frank Gerber. Harry Maxfield, Fred Howland, Ralph Carlson, Harold Carlson and Elmer Wallgren serving as pallbearers.
Sarah A. Lewis, daughter of Rev. J.W. and Samantha L. Lewis was born at Elsie, Mich., Oct. 8, 1853. On Oct. 11, 1878 she married Alfred Smith at Kanesville, Ill. with her father performing the ceremony. In 1872 they came to Tampico where Mr. Smith started in the hardware business in which he continued actively until his death at the age of 93.
Mrs. Smith was a member of the Baptist church in which she was a faithful worker as long as her health permitted. She also belonged to the Woman's Relief Corps.
She is survived by her daughter, Mrs. Ina Hellier, who has lived with her mother and given her every care; and one son, Earle who was in business with his father and has operated the stsore since his death. Also two granddaughters, Mrs. Eleanor McKenzie of Chicago and Mrs. Dorothy Carlson of Tampico and three great grandchildren, David McKenzie and Donald and Alan Carlson. A niece, Mrs. Myrtle Wheelock of Waukegan, who was reared by Mr. and Mrs. Smith was called here by her death. She was preceded in death by four sisters and one brother.
