HUBERT DARBY ANSWERED CALL
Postmaster Hubert Darby, 58, a lifetime resident of Tampico, passed away at 7:15 Sunday evening, Sept. 2nd, at the Community General hospital in Sterling. He had been ill for four months.
Hubert W. Darby, a son of Charles and Mary Darby, was born in Sterling, Ill. May 16, 1898. The family moved to Tampico where he attended the grade and high school.
On June 16, 1934 he was married to Florence Steinke in St. Mary’s church, Tampico.
Mr. Darby was a member of St. Mary’s church and postal Associations. He was an honorary member of the Tampico Volunteer Fire Department, having served over 30 years before retiring a few years ago.
He is survived by his wife, Florence of Tampico; one sister, Margaret Wolfe of Garden City, N. Y.; and four brothers, Thomas of Cresco, Ia., John of Springfield, James of Tampico and Lawrence of Des Moines, Ia.
The rosary was recited at Parent’s chapel Tuesday evening.
Funeral services were held Wednesday morning at 9:30 from St. Mary’s church with Rev. A.M. Weitekamp officiating.
Burial was in St. Mary’s cemetery with Roy Hockman, Nim Gosney, Michael Donnelly, Hubert Schauff, Thomas Henrekin and August Brandau serving as pallbearers.
Mr. Darby had served as postmaster since 1934 and his desire to be of service and his cheerful disposition and ready wit won him a host of friends.
