PROPHETSTOWN – Esther L. Garman Davis, 101, of Prophetstown, died Wednesday, April 24, 2013, at Prophets Riverview Good Samaritan in Prophetstown.

She was born Dec. 7, 1911, in Lanark, the daughter of Robert and Bertha (Shafer) Garman. She graduated from Polo High School, and from Northern Illinois University in DeKalb. She later did her graduate study at Western Illinois University in Macomb. She married Joe M. Davis on Dec. 23, 1943, in Brookville. He preceded her in death on May 27, 1985.

Esther taught school in various cities in Illinois and Evansville, Wis., where she trained student teachers for the University of Wisconsin. Esther had educated young children for 47 years. She was a member of First Lutheran Church in Prophetstown. She also was a member of the National Education Association, Illinois Education Association, and the Whiteside County Retired Teachers Association. Esther was an original bond holder and proud member of Prophet Hills Country Club.

She enjoyed spending time with her lifelong friends, including the bridge card club and pinochle groups. She also was an avid Chicago Cubs baseball fan.

Survivors include one daughter, Joetta (Gary) Camp of Virginia Beach, Va.; two grandchildren, Melissa Camp and Scott Camp; two great-grandchildren; Merrick and Phoenix Gilstrap; one stepson, Jeffrey (Lana) Davis of Freeport; and one stepgrandson, Lee (Nancy) Wagner.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe; and her stepdaughter, Marilyn Wagner.

Visitation will be from 12:30 to 1 p.m. Saturday and the funeral at 1 p.m. Saturday at First Lutheran Church in Prophetstown, with the Rev. Greg Olson, pastor, officiating. Interment will be at 4 p.m. Saturday at Fairmount Cemetery in Polo. Bosma-Gibson Funeral Home in Prophetstown is handling arrangements.

Memorials may be made to First Lutheran Church and Prophets Riverview Good Samaritan, both in Prophetstown.
