PROPHETSTOWN – Vernon Elgin, 87, formerly of Tampico, died Sunday, Feb. 2, 2014, at Prophets Good Samaritan Center in Prophetstown. Arrangements are pending at Garland Funeral Home in Tampico.

Vernon was born on October 3, 1926 in Annawan, Illinois, the son of Edward Wm. and Mary Jane (Chilerey) Elgin. He was united in marriage to Bernadine Anderson on December 8, 1951 in Kewanee, Illinois. She preceded him in death on August 27, 2012. He was an avid Green Bay Packers and St. louis Cardinals fan. Vernon is a World War II veteran, having served in the Army. He worked at Northwestern Steel and Wire, retiring after 35 years.
He is survived by his four sons: Ronald (Anita) Elgin of Tampico, Illinois, Darryl (Karen) Elgin of Rock Falls, Illinois, Marvin (Charlene) Elgin of Hatley, Wisconsin and Lauren (Sue) Elgin of East Moline, Illinois; ten grandchildren; twenty-two great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, one daughter Janice, one brother Kenneth and one sister Geneva.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, February 7 at 10a.m. at the Garland Funeral Home in Tampico with the Rev. Karl Kaiser, passtor of Tampico Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Tampico Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Thrusday, February 6 from 4-8 p.m. at the Garland Funeral Home in Tampico.
A memorial has been established to the Tampico Baptist Church.
