Mavis M. DeCourcey, 85, of Canton passed away Thursday (June 19, 2014) at 6 a.m. at her residence.
She was born Jan. 26, 1929, in Yorktown Township to Charles and Marguerite DeReu Vetter. She married Robert F. DeCourcey April 27, 1947, in Prophetstown.
He preceded her in death on Aug. 17, 2007, along with her parents; sons Mark and Matthew “Rocky”; one brother, Charles F. Vetter; one grandchild; and one great-grandchild.
Surviving are four children, Gregory (Rose) DeCourcey of Alton, Joseph (Darlene) DeCourcey of Kansas City, Mo., Mary Clare (Tom) Knox of Maquon and Kay (Frank) Glaser of London Mills; 12 grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and nine stepgreat-grandchildren.
Mavis was a hairdresser for Klip & Kurl in Canton and later worked from her home. She was a member of St Mary’s Catholic Church and its Altar and Rosary Society, the Fairview Woman’s Club, Fairview American Legion Auxiliary and the Fiatt Pinochle Club.
Mavis was very creative, enjoyed dancing, traveling, music and spending time with her family and friends. Mavis was known for her “gift of gab”!
A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, June 23, at the Oaks-Hines Funeral Home in Canton with a visitation Sunday, June 22, from 4-6 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be held at the Fairview Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the Fairview Fire Department, the OSF Hospice of Galesburg or the Fairview American Legion Auxiliary.
