Former County Coroner John Meyer Dies
A former Whiteside County Coroner and arbitrator for the industrial Relations Commission, State of Illinois, John T. Meyer, 604 2nd Ave., Sterling, died Sunday morning in Community General Hospital after an extended illness.
Friends may call at the Melvin Funeral Home from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday and from 8 a.m. Wednesday until the funeral servies at 1:30 p.m. in the funeral home. The Rev. Jean Saltzman, pastor of Fourth Street United Methodist Church, will officiate and burial will be in Riverside Cemetery. A memorial has been established to Fourth Street United Methodist Church.
Mr. Meyer was Whiteside County Coroner for eight years and a Republican precinct committeeman for 20 years. He was appointed by former Gov. William G. Stratton to the post of arbitrator and served in that capacity nine years. He was a past master of the Sterling Masonic Lodge 612 AF and AM and was active in the Sterling Elks Club and Sterling Rotary Club. He was a member of Fourth Street United Methodist Church.
John T. Meyer was born June 12, 1895 in Minonk, Ill., the son of Herman G. and Henrietta Janssen Meyer. He was a graduate of Sterling High School and attended the University of Illinois and Northwestern University. He was united in marriage to the former Elyda Spear in Rock Falls, Sept. 15, 1917.
Survivors include his wife, Elyda, and one daughter, Mrs. Harry (Elizabeth) Mitchell of Wheaton; one sister, Mrs. August (Tina) Gerdes of Prophetstown; two brothers, Edward J. Meyer of Milledgeville and Louis H. Meyer of Franklin Grove; three granddaughters, Mrs. Kenneth (Ann) Parent of Manila, Philippines; Mrs. William (Jane) Gregga, Champaign and Miss Susan Mitchell; Wheaton. He was preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters.
