ROCK FALLS – Virgil E. VanDeVelde, 94, of Rock Falls, died Monday, Aug. 1, 2016, at Regency Care of Sterling.
He was born July 7, 1922, in Sheffield, the son of Bruno and Emma (Bender) VanDeVelde. He married Margery Lee Allen on Feb. 15, 1947, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Tampico. She died March 21, 2015. Virgil had been engaged in farming for 64 years in the Deer Grove and Rock Falls areas, and had been a DeKalb Seed Corn sales representative for 42 years. He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Tampico. Virgil and Margery greatly enjoyed dancing, and were highly accomplished ballroom dancers.
Survivors include two sons, Douglas VanDeVelde and Brian (Pamela) VanDeVelde, both of Rock Falls; his brother, Robert VanDeVelde of Sterling; two grandchildren, Casey and Crystal; and one great-grandchild, Caden.
He also was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Esther and Dorothy; and three brothers, Harold, Joe, and Wallace.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m., with the rosary recited at 4:30 p.m., Thursday at Garland Funeral Home in Tampico. Celebration of the Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Mary Catholic Church in Tampico, with the Rev. Richard Kramer officiating. Burial will be at St. Mary Cemetery in Tampico.
Memorials have been established to St. Mary Catholic Church and Alzheimer's Research.
