DEATH OF KATHRYN COONEY

Beautiful Character Passed To Home Above Last Week in Chicago Hospital

Death called Miss Kathryn Cooney last Saturday afternoon at 3:45 o'clock at the Columbus hospital in Chicago and her beautiful young life slipped away from the a happy home circle to the more beauriful home eternal -  the first one of the twelve grown children to be called by the Father above.

Death followed an operation performed last Tuesday morning for appendicitis from which she had suffered for some time. For the past two years she had given her life strength to alleviate the sufferings of others at the hospital having been in training for two years, and happy that she could help others.

The remains were brought here Sunday via Sterling and taken to the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Thos. Cooney in the eastern part of town where they reposed surrounded by many sympathetic friends, neighbors and relatives until Tuesday morning when the funeral services were held at 10 o'clock at St. Mary's church, Solomn high mass was celebrated by Father Du Four, Rev. P. J. Weber of Aurora a former pastor being the deacon and Rev. T. Moore of Morrison sub-deacon. The church was completely filled with relatives and friends of the deceased and there were a number of beautiful floral tributes to her life and works among them being a pillow from her class, the class of 1913 at the hospital. Five members of the class, Clara Heath, Lucy Hermon, Katherine Walsh, Loretta Head, and Schelia Reen came out from Chicago to attend the funeral and acted as an honorary escort. The pall bearers were the brothers. Father Du Four in his sermon paid a splendid tribute to the beautiful life of the deceased. He spoke of her excellent disposition, fine character and the sacrifice necessary for a young lady who took up the profession of nurse indicating her love for humanity, her moral standard and beautiful life back of all her deeds. Father Du Four held her life up as an example and object lesson for which people should feel elated that they had enjoyed the privilege of seeing and knowing. Interment was in St. Mary's cemetery here.

Kathryn E. Cooney was born Oct. 7, 1883 in Hahnaman township at the old home place two miles east of Tampico where she lived practically all her life until five years ago when she went to Chicago which has been her home ever since. In another year she would have graduated with honors into her chosen profession, a nurse at the Columbus hospital. Endowed with a sweet disposition and a spirit to help and assist her friends, it is no wonder that her death is mourned deeply and the blow falls heavily on the home where the first of a large, happy family has been called.

The parents, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Cooney of this place and seven brothers and four sisters survive. They are: Walter, Patrick, William, Thomas and John residing in this vicinity, Peter and Michael of Chicago, Mary residing at the home farm, Marguerite at home, Lizzie and Frances of Chicago.

There were a large number of relatives and friends from out of town to attend the funeral among them being: Assesor Michael Sheridan, James Dempsey, Mrs. D. W. Livery all of Chicago, Mrs. John Kennedy and son, Tom Downey and Winnie Downey, Mrs. Mary Baskerville of Joliet, Mrs. Alice Bagely of Clinton, Hon. W. A. Kannally, A. M. Clavin, W. Gallager, John Dundon and Elizabeth McGrath of Sterling, Luke Cooney of Pullman, Mr. and Mrs. M. F. Cooney of Chicago.
