SKETCH OF LIFE
Myrtle W. McKenzie was born in Portland township August 16, 1877, and died at her home in Hume in Hume township November 14, 1912. In the year 1898 on October 26, she was united in marriage to Charles D. Cleaveland of Hume. Her whole life having been spent in Whiteside county in the vicinity of Rock Falls and Prophetstown. Mrs. Cleaveland's girlhood days were spent in Portland, after which she with the family spent some years in the vicinity of Rock Falls. After her marriage for a number of years she resided in Prophetstown and Rock Falls, the last part of her life being spent in Hume township on a farm.
Living as she did in different places in the county and being a person of a congenial disposition she naturally had many friends in the county who will mourn her death. Mrs. Cleaveland leaves to mourn her husband, her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Nathan L. McKenzie of Rock Falls, also a sister, Mrs. E. M. Wakeman of the same city, beside a brother whose home is in Canada, Fay McKenzie. She also leaves many miner relatives and many friends.
Mrs. Cleaveland was a member of the Eastern Star of Rock Falls, the W.R.C. and the Fraternal Reserves of Prophetstown, also the Ladies' Aid society of West Hume and the King's Daughters of the same place. The fact that she was a member of so many socieities testifies to the genuine worth of the lady. She was known by the scribe as a pupil of his when he taught in Portland and at this we want to add our bouquet after death for we know her as a bright, beautiful character, studious as studiousness goes with a child just blooming into her teens. We extend to the husband and parents our sincere condolence, knowing full well what this cup of grief means.
