Gene M. Strouss, 73, of 4 N. Mason Ave., Amboy, died Sunday, Jan. 27, 1980. He was well known in this area, as he was co-publisher and editor of The Amboy News for the past 46 years. He suffered an apparent heart attack and fell one block from his home. He was taken to KSB Hospital in Dixon by the Amboy Rescue Squad where he died a short time later.:
Mr. Strouss started in the barber trade as a young man serving as an apprentice under his father. He started working in the newspaper business on the Tampico Tornado, then as a correspondent on the Sterling Gazette during his high school years.: He later worked on the Tri-County Press in Polo, working for John J. Wagner. When Mr. Wagner bought The Amboy News in 1933, Mr. Strouss and his family moved to Amboy, where he has lived since. When Mr. Wagner died in 1961, Strouss became editor and co-publisher with Richard J. Wagner.: He has held the office of vice president of the Northern Illinois Press Association, was a member of the Mendota Elks Club, the Chicago Motor Club, and was a member of the St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Amboy. He served several years on the Library Board and on the city council in Amboy.: He was born April 21, 1906 in Tampico, the son of John and Amy (Ewer) Strouss. He married Dorothy Kramer May 29, 1927 in St. Mary's Catholic Church in Polo.: He was preceded in death by one brother and one sister.: Survivors include his widow, and a daughter, Mrs. Charles (Beverly) Cramer of Dixon.: Prayer service was held Wednesday morning at Mihm-Jones Funeral Home in Amboy, followed by 11:00 a.m. Mass of the Resurrection at St. Patrick's Church with Msgr. Raymond J. Wahl, pastor, officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.: Those serving as pallbearers were Jack Elliott, Robert Spenader, Larry Hawes, Charles Welty, Henry Mortensen and Thomas Shaw.: A memorial has been established for the Lee County Diabetes Association.
