Tampico Tornado, Saturday, January 31, 1880
Levi BROWN was born in Washington county, New York, Aug. 12, 1810. He came to Illinois in 1854 and settled near Yorktown in Bureau County, which has since been his home. Mr. BROWN never married. He mainly supported his parents as long as they lived, seemingly deeming it a privilage as well as a duty to lovingly care for those in their declining years who had watched over him in infancy's helplessness, and childhood's waywardness, and in later years he provided for two maiden sisters until their decease, a few years since. Thus manifesting in an ominent degree the spirit of filial and fraternal love. In his relatiions with his fellows he endeavored to be right. He was honest from principle; he was kind and charitable, from the natural impulses of a heart refined by Devine grace, and so loved peace and quietness that he would suffer wrong rather than engage in legal strife, saying that he could better afford to sustain loss than others could to inflict it. It was said of him by those who knew him best that if all were like him there would be no need of courts, nor jails.
He had been a member of the M. E. Church for forty-five years, and though on account of lameness and feeble health he was unabled to attend the means of grace as much as he desired, yet he endeavored to maintain the life of godliness in the soul by the more faithful use and improvement of the home privilages.
For some time he had made his home with his niece and her husband, *Mr. and Mrs. Saunders, who were living on his farm and from whom he received all the care and attention that was needful for his comfort. His decline was gradual, from diseases that had long been preying up on his system, and all that medical skill could do was done to afford temporary relief.
He passed peacefully away on the evening of January 21, 1880 and the funeral services were held on the 23rd, conducted by Rev. F. POMEROY. The remains were buried in Greenville Cemetery.
