ANOTHER PIONEER GONE

I. B. EMMONS - another of the pioneers of Whiteside County, died in Gardenplain, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Ellen SWEET, Tuesday evening at 7 o'clock. The funeral was held this afternoon at 1:30 o'clock at the home and it was attended by a large number of relatives from this city and Rock Falls. A number of the veterans of the Civil War from this city were also in attendance, as the deceased was a member of Will Robinson post G. A. R. of this city. The burial was in the Gardenplain cemetery beside the remains of his wife.

Mr. EMMONS was born in Litchfield, Conn., in 1822. He went to Pennsylvania while quite young and was married there to Rebekah WALLEN. They moved to Sterling the next year and Mr. EMMONS began the trade of wagon maker. He later went from here to Albany and later to Newton township, which place he represented as supervisor for a number of years. He was also deputy sheriff in this county for some time. He was later in Kansas for a few years and then in Montmorency south of Rock Falls. After living there for eight years he moved to Gardenplain where he has lived since. His wife died about twelve years ago.

The deceased was a man of remarkably strong personality. He was a Democrat in politics all of his life. He was honest and upright at all times, a good father and husband and true friend. He is survived by four daughters and one son. They are: Mrs. Ellen SWEET of Gardenplain, Mrs. Oscar PARK of Fulton, Mrs. Hattie STROUD of Gardenplain, Mrs. Blanche YORK of Fulton, and S. L. EMMONS of Amboy. He also leaves one brother, L. L. EMMONS, Sr., of Rock Falls, who is now the last surviving member of the family and is eighty-three years old.

Note from transcriber: Many thanks to Les Niemi for corrections to original transcription on spelling of names. He also noted that the brother, L. L. Emmons, Sr. was Lehman L. Emmons, Sr., husband of Jane (nee HALE).
