N. A. LATHROP DIED SATURDAY
N. A. LATHROP a well known citizen of New Bedford died at his home there last week Saturday after a short illness.
Nathan A. LATHROP was born April 8, 1839. He was married to Armena A. O'DELL in 1869 with whom lived for thirty-nine years until her death in 1899. Of this union were born four sons and three daughters: Mrs. R. W. EGAN of Sandwich, Mrs. Mamie HERBST of Nachusa, Marion S. and Bertie N. of Streator, Milan M. of Buda, Ackley P. of New Bedford and Nellie the youngest who died at the age of one year. There are ten grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
In 1900 he was married to Mrs. Lydia BAILEY who also survives him. Several years ago he united with the Free Methodist church and for some time he maintained active relation to that church.
He enlisted in Co. C. 93rd Illinois Aug. 14, 1862 and was mustered out June 23, 1865. Within these three years he passed through terrible experiences. Eighteen months were passed in the undesirable horrors of Cohawhe and Andersonville prisons. He was in the engagement of Chamion Hill and took part in the siege of Vicksburg and only escaped the terrors of Sherman's March to the sea by the more bitter expeirences of the rebel prison. In public addresses he has given detailed accounts of the conditons which he and his comrades suffered.
A heart-felt sympathy of a wide circle of friends goes out to the bereaved relatives.
