ALBANY NEWSPAPERS 1883 The Abany Times - started by W. G. Bleecker in spring of 1883. Suspended in summer of 1884. Moved to Clinton, Iowa.
1884 The Albany News - est. by F. C. & W. G. Redline. First issue Dec. 12, 1884. Issued every Friday.
FULTON NEWSPAPERS 1854 FIRST NEWSPAPER PUBLISHED IN THE COUNTY Whiteside Investigator, first issue May 1854. Owners: Judge James McCoy & John Phelps. Sold to McFadden and G. A. Laighton as a partner. Later, Laighton became sole owner. Changed the name to Fulton City Advertiser. Laighton became involved indebt and quit the country, leaving the paper in the hands of subordinates, and after a few issues it suspened.
1859 Weekly Courier - G. J. Booth & B. C. Galliday leased the print equipment from the defunct Advertiser. A few months later, Galliday withdrew and Booth had entire charge. 1863 - Booth purchased the plant from Laighton and changed the name to the Fulton Journal. In 1866, Mr. Booth took his on into the office and paper was under the name of G. J. Booth & son. 1872-George Terwilliger purchased the paper and became editor/prop. In the fall of the same year, he sold half interest to Dr. W. C. Snyder. 1876 (March), Snyder purchased entire interest. 1876- Thos. J. Pickett, Jr. leased paper from Dr. Snyder. Then Pickett and J. C. Snyder purchased it. 1878 - W. R. Cobb bought Pickett's interest. 1880 it was purchased by the Sterling Gazette Co. & J. C. Snyder retained as editor. 1881, Fred K. Bastian, local editor of Gazette, purchased the entire interest. In August 1881, his brother, A. W. came in as a partner. Now called the Journal and was published semi-weekly. Originally published as a Democrat paper, in 1859 it changed to a Republican paper until 1881 it became an independent Democratic journal.
1883 Fulton Star - est. by Rev. George W. Perry. First issue Jan. 4, 1883. Weekly journal. Republican paper. Mr. Perry's sons, George T. and W. F., took over the paper due to ill health of their father.
MORRISON NEWSPAPERS 1857 The Whiteside Sentinel - July 23, 1857, Alfred McFadden. 1862 - Leased to Elmer Searle for one year. 1867 - Sentinel purchsed by Charles Bent and Morris Savage. 1870 (May) - Bent purchased Savage's interest. 1877 - Bent sold to Robert W. Welch of NY. abt 1880 - Bent purchased it back from Welch.
1868-1870 Reform Investigator - Elmer Searle, publ. Moved to Chicago in 1870. Burned in 1871 Chicago fire.
1872-1874 Morrison Independent - L. S. Ward and editor, J. W. Huett. 1874-1876 The Morrison Independent office was purchased by G. J. Booth & son. In July, 1874 established the Morrison Times.
1876 Morrison Times moved to Rock Falls and from it was issued forth in a short time the Whiteside Times. The Morrison Democrat - Owners Connelly & Gove, who moved their office from Lyndon. Closed shortly after R. Hayes inauguration.
1878 The Whiteside Herald - weekly on Frid., founded by A. D. Hill. First issue April 4, 1878. Fall of 1878, A. D. Adams purchased an interest. 1882 - A. D. leased the paper. 1883 - Adms purchased Mr. Hill';s interest.
STERLING NEWSPAPERS 1854-1857 Times - Dec. 12, 1854, Charles Boynton, editor. First paper in Sterling. 1856 Sterling Republican - July 1856, Wm Caffrey prop/editor 1857 Republican and Gazette - proprietors of the Republican & the Gazette united the two papers under the name of Republican and Gazette. Mr. Grattan sold his interest to Walter Nimocks, firm became Caffrey & Nimocks. Shortly thereafter, Mr. Caffrey became sole proprietor. The name of Republican was dropped. 1857-8 Sterling Gazette - Caffrey sole prop. 1861, Mr. Caffrey sold to C.M. Worthington & Co., Mr. Worthington soon becoming sole proprietor. 1870, sold to Geor. Terwilliger. He sold back to Mr. Worthington shortly thereafter. 1876, W. F. Eastman became sole prop.. In July 1876, partnered with D. J. Jenne. (Eastman & Jenne). 1880, the Sterling Gazette Com organized. w. F. Eastman Pre., D. J. Jenne, Treasurer, and W. R. Cobb, Sec. Sept. 1882, C. John was elected Pres. of the company, and W. R. Cobb, Sec. and Treasurer. 1878, publication of a "Daily" was short lived. 1882 another attempt to publish a daily paper was successful. June, 1883, Daily paper was enlarged.
1868 (June) Whiteside Chronicle, Theo H. and Charles M. Mack editors/prop. June, 1870, Theo Mack purchased the interest of his brother, became sole prop. 1872, changed the name to the Sterling Standard 1883, sold half interest to J. W. Newcomer. 1884, (June) Alfred Bayliss purchased interst of Mr. Mack, new firm of Newcomer & Bayliss. Note: The Gazette & the Standard were consolidated July 24, 1916
1877 The Sterling Beobachter - only German newspaper in county. Charles Strock 1881, sold to H. Mathey. 1883, Louis Oltmanns sole editor/prop.
1881-1883 The Daily Blade, A. J. Booth
1884 The Sterling (weekly) Blade - A. J. Booth. A special farmers' edition is issued each week and distributed gratuitously to patrons of the Blade.

PROPHETSTOWN NEWSPAPERS 1871 The Prophetstown Spike - published every Saturday. A. D. Hill, prop/editor. Charles Bent was partner until 1872. 1878 sold to J. W. Olmstead. 1883 repurchased by A. D. Hill. Politically the paper is Republican.
ROCK FALLS NEWSPAPERS 1870-1877 Rock Falls Progress (Cadwell & Tuttle) First paper est. in the village. 1876-1878 The Whiteside Times - A. J. Booth & Co.. 1878-1879 The Whiteside Times sold to Hyde & Searle. Paper was suspended in 1879 1879 Searle's Times - Elmer Searle of Hyde & Searle. Only published 3 months 1879 The Ensign of Liberty - Feb. 25, 1879 - abt. May 1879. Advocated the principles of the National Greenback party. 1882 Rock Falls News - Wm Parker, editor/prop. Still in existance at tie of historical printing in 1885.
LYNDON NEWSPAPER 1883 LYNDON - The Advocate. The first issue of this paper appeared July 7, 1883. Mr. W. M. PATRICK moved his paper from Mendota, where is was published and known as the Mendota Index. The Advocate is independent in politics, is published every Saturday
