I am a gg grandson of Jennie Maria Hogeboom (daughter of Hiland and Anjenetta...one of several spellings for her). The last trace I have of Jennie Hogeboom before she married James M. Johnson is a baptism in Illinois in 1899. She later turns up in the 1920 federal census living in Dorset, VT (birthplace of her parents) as Jennie M. Johnson (born Illinois), wife of James M. Johnson (born Tennessee), with children Nellie M. (my mother's mother), Archibald W., M. Alvin, and Edwin S. Hogeboom (Jennie's brother) and Joel P. Hogeboom (Jennie's brother).

The part I am having trouble with is tracing Jennie's life from about 1899 - 1920. Her husband, James M. Johnson, was born in Tennessee (1877/1878), and his father (unknown name) was born in Missouri, and his mother (unknown name) was born in Tennessee.

I am able to trace my gg grandmother's (Jennie) side back quite a bit, but can't find any information regarding her husband. I have plenty of descendant information for Jennie regarding her relatives in New York, where I believed she eventually passed, and would be glad to share what I have. Any help regarding my problem would be greatly appreciated.

Also, a special thanks to Les N. who has provided much about Noah John Hogeboom and his descendants (I believe he is my 4g grandfather).

Looks like they all migrated back to VT.
Database: 1910 United States Federal Census
Name: Hiland H Hogeboom
Age in 1910: 64
Estimated birth year: abt 1846
Birthplace: Vermont
Home in 1910: Dorset, Bennington, Vermont
Race: White
Gender: Male

Hiland did show up in the Bureau Cty Voters and Taxpayers roster in 1877. I'll keep checking on this end to see what I can find. Unfortunately, Les N. isn't available to help us for a while. :~(

Have you checked with the Historical or Genealogical Societies in that area?

Ronald,

How great to hear from you (cousin). Hiland is the brother of my GG grandfather John Noah HOGEBOOM who, with Hiland Henry HOGEBOOM was born in Manchester, Bennington Co., VT.
I have some interesting information regarding Hiland and his wife, Anjennetta nee SYKES that I will send later (I am currently in South Africa for 3 weeks and have a very slow connection, so it doesn't work well to send images, etc).

I look forward to sharing information with you when I get back to the states.

Les Niemi

Here's the obit from the Tampico Tornado for Hiland:

Tampico Tornado
January 1, 1920
DEATH OF FORMER RESIDENT
On the morning of Dec. 15th, 1919, the people of Dorset, Vermont, were saddened to hear of the sudden passing of Hiland H. HOGEBOOM.
It seems that Mr. HOGEBOOM had risen apparently as well as ever, but about 8:30 and while setting in his chair by the stove he suddenly fell forward and made no sound of any kind and when his daughter and son rushed to his side and raised him, he gave a long sigh and was gone, a merciful passing surely.
Hland H. HOGEBOOM was born on Nov. 12th, 1845 in Manchester, Vt. When in his ninth year he moved with his parents to Bureau County, Illinois. On November 21st, 1878 he married Anjenetta SYKES of Dorset, Vt. and settled down on the home place, with his parents three miles south of Tampico. Here five children were born, Jennie M., Emma L. (deceased), Edwin S. Joel P. and Harry K.
Later selling the farm they moved into the village but on account of failing health, they moved to Mansfield, Mo., in 1901, but finding no improvement, made their way back to the Mountain State in the fall of 1906 making their last home in Dorset, VT., on the hill road of the West Mountain.
Their daughter Jennie had married Mr. James JOHNSON, of Mansfield, Mo. Their son Harry also left home, going into business in New York but Edwin had remained on the farm.
Mr. HOGEBOOM lost his wife on March 11th, 1918, when Mr. and Mrs. JOHNSON with their trhee children came to Dorset to care for their aging father.
Mr. HOGEBOOM was a lovable man, gentle, kindly and good. A Methodist by profession and an old member of teh Modern Woodman of America.
The funeral was held Thursday, Dec. 18th, at 1 o'clock, a prayer at the house and teh funeral services at the Dorset Congregational church, the pastor officiating. He was laid to rest beside his wife in the Maple Hill cemetery. Members of the Woodamn acting as pall bearers.

Great to hear from you Les! I was hoping you might have some more personal information like this. Maybe now I can trace down the other side (the Johnsons), knowing where in Missouri they were from. I get the impression from everything I have read so far that the Hogebooms were quite a respected family. I look forward to communicating with you on your return from South Africa.
