Have been looking for military information on movement (or even personal diaries) of the CO I, 45thRegiment of IllinoisInfantry, which my grandfather, George Lewis Howell enlisted in from 1861-1864. After serving his three year tour he was discharged in Savannah GA on 23 December 1864. Any resource info would be appreciated. D.Griffith

The "ILLINOIS ADJUTENT GENERALS REPORT" A five volume set listing all the men, their township of enlistment, their disposition, and their unit histories is available at the Morrison and other libraries. I can tell you the 45th saw heavy action at Vicksburg, Mississippi. One of my dear friends, Art Robbe, of Mount Carroll, was the grandson of a 45TH veteran. His grandfather was left on the battlefield with the dead until a fellow Mount Carroll soldier found him barely alive and drug him from the field... I recommend that you make a trip to Mount Carroll, Ill to view the wonderful Civil War monument there. Art Robbe's grandfather served as one of the models for this work !

Thank you Denise and Richard for information on the 45th Illinois Infantry and George Lewis Howell. I will keep information you provided in my HOWELL file so that when we travel east we can visit your sites (I live in Oregon). George Howell and wife Mary Condit Howell moved to Oregon in 1905 with half of their 14 children after the death of his father Lewis W. Howell (who lived in Clover Twp/Woodhull from 1854 to 1905). George died in Linn County, Harrisburg, Oregon on 13 March 1923. Darlene Griffith

My Gr-Gr-Grandfather Orsamus Beardslee was in 45th Co. I. He fought through Shiloh and was on station at Medon Station in Tenn when he was involved in the battle on Aug 31 1862. I found a newspaper article about this battle in the Jackson Chronicle dated Sept 6th 1862 with a narrative about the valient fight by Illinois boys. The article lists the dead and wounded by name and his name is listed with a head wound. He spent 8 months recouperating at Jefferson Barracks in st. Louis and our family is in possion of a letter written in his hand in March 1863 to his wife. Very enlightening in a beautiful flourish in his hand and words with grammar just as it was in 1863. I would like to share it with any 45 descendants. Google Battle at Medon Station and you can find the Jackson news article about Medon and Britton Lane.
