It was interesting to see pictures of the relatives. do you know if there are any pictures of Betsy Ann their mother? Thanks Loretta My great grandfather was James Dittmus Newell son of Besty Ann Johnston and James Monroe Newell I have been doing research on the family tree and enjoyed this site. Feel free to e-mail me at ljbarb@aol.com with any questions or information you may have. Do you know if Betsy Ann was half Indian, and was it the Potawaumme tribe. This it what I have heard. susieq 5 posts Jan 01, 2007 4:29 PM	Hi Loretta James Monroe Newell and Betsy Ann Johnston are my gg grandparents also. My g grandfather is Simon Jester Newell and grandfather is James Monroe Newell II My grandfather married Sadie Mae Rasmussen. I believe instead of James Dittmus it is Jerome Dittmus Newell, eldest son of James and Betsy. My Father was Kenneth J Newell, son of James M II and Sadie Newell. Would share information with you if you are interested.
LesN 124 posts Apr 24, 2007 7:09 PM	Here's the obit of Catherine NEWELL, dau of Jerome D. NEWELL, that I transcribed from the Tampico Tornado - Les February 6, 1919 DEATH OF MRS. EARL TALMAGE The body of Mrs. Earl TALMAGE of Kendallville, Ind., was brought back here for burial last Saturday. She will be remembered by many people south of Tampico, where she often visited relatives in her earlier life. Catherine Algiva NEWELL was born in Griffith, Lake Co., Ind., Sept. 2, 1891, died Jan. 30, 1919 at her home in Kendallville, Ind., aged 27 years, 4 mos., and 29 days. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jerome D. NEWELL. In her early childhood, she was baptized by Rev. BALDWIN, pastor of the M.E. church at Ross, Ind., in the summer of 1896 she moved with her parents to West Pullman, Ill., then to Chicago and in Dec. 1911, to Indiana where she remained until the time of her death. She was married to Earl W. TALMAGE at Chicago June 13, 1913. To this union were born three children, Josephine E., Frances H., and Phill A. aged five, three and one, respectively. Besides her sorrowing husband and children, she leaves to mourn her demise, her mother, two brothers – Earl NEWELL of Morrison, Mark of Chicago, and Lyle who is now in France serving as a Red Cross nurse and an adopted sister, Mrs. John M. GRAVATT of Kendallville, Indiana. Her brother Geo. P. NEWELL preceded her to the great beyond Feb. 6, 1916. She has aunts, uncles and several cousins who are residents of this vicinity. The funeral was held last Sunday afternoon at 2 o’clock at the home of her uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. Will F. STEERS in Fairfield Rev. L.C. BRINK officiating, assisted by Mrs. Lena NELIC, Mrs. Cora BARD, Geo. DEITZ and Roland LATRHOP, Mrs. Sylvia LINDREN acting as accompanist. The pall bearers were six cousins: Floyd HOWLETT, Frank NEWELL, Elmer and Percy CULLEY, Jack HELLIER, and Clare STEERS. There were several beautiful floral tributes. Internment was in the Greenville-Fairfield cemetery.
