Andy Hinton (Yorktown 74-84, THS class of 87) here. Just something interesting. I've been in the Navy now for 16 years, & I'm currently with the USMC in Minneapolis. I ran in to Kyle Kupker (class of 88) (sorry if I mis-spelled!) here in Minneapolis (Ft Snelling)back in December, I believe. He was in a MN Nat. Guard unit out of Stillwater, MN, & on his way to Iraqistan. My old Seabee unit had a guy from Manlius, & he had a brother back home that worked with my brother. Another guy in the same unit married Maryl Smiley (class of 90), & I saw him in Tampico a few years back. I've run in to others not from Tampico in very scattered locations, including St Paul, MN; Fon du Lac, WI; Camp Pendelton, CA; & Camp Lejeune, NC. Frankie Spooner (class of 88)saw me but couldn't believe it in 97 or 98 on Okinawa (Japan). He told me that at Tampico Days... I asked him why he couldn't say "hi", even if it wasn't me! One weird thing is that Kyle, Frankie, & I were all on the 2-mile relay in 87. If I see Scott Batten driving trucks in Iraq, I'll crap, as he's the only member of that team I haven't had a reunion with (in uniform). I did see him at the same time I was talking with Frank. Like they say, the longer you're in, the smaller the [Navy] gets! If anyone has updates for their family members from the Tampico area, serving or who have served, I think it would be great for everone to see. I know just from the 31 of us from 87, Wes Anderson was in the IA Guard, Art Romero joined the Air Farce, Doug Haney was in the Army, Tom Woodcock joined the Navy, & I joined the IL Guard, & then the Navy in 90. Would love any updates! I plan on being at Tampico Days this summer, so see ya there! Tom's living in Cumming, GA, & I hope to see him soon. One other weird run-in... I was flying to Guatanamo Bay, Cuba, & I was getting ready to board at O'Hare, to Norfolk, VA... the plane from Moline got there, & Bill Stickle (class of 82?)rushed up to the counter. Anyway, I had Easter dinner with him & his beautiful wife, Char [Swanson] in 93, in Cuba. Small world!

Another (non-military) "small world" uppdate... I ran into a guy, older gentleman, working at Walmart in Forest Lake, MN (where I currently live). He was friends with and still keeps in touch with Thera Akleberg (I hope I spelled that right), who lives in Arizona now. I know she was the kindergarten teacher for hundreds of us from Tampico. I'll be in that area, visiting my sister in a few months, on my way to the west coast (Camp Pendleton, CA), & I hope I can stop-in & visit. The gentleman I spoke with was a minister in Erie some years back.

Andy, Thanks for keeping us updated on your "finds." You may want to start a new Message thread with the surname of topic in the subject line, so more folks might read it.
Let us know if you do get a chance to visit and what transpired. ---------- Denise Family History Coordinator Tampico Area Historical Society
