This is to the indidvidual "Kathy" who inquired about the Bursk/Schultz families. Joseph Bursk married Maggie Journey who lived in Abingdon, Illinois. I believe Maggie had a brother, Frank, who, during the depression raised pheasants on the northeast side of the intersection of the highway and the Hennipen Canal at Mile Nine on the canal a few miles south of Rock Falls. She also had two sisters that lived in Sterling. One was Olive who married John Andrews and they ran a motor hotel and a root beer stand on a highway running west out of Sterling. The other sister was Clara who married Orion Hoak. Orion died in Sebring, Florida in either 1918 or 1919. Clara moved back to Sterling and bought a big double house and took in roomers until 1929 (I think) when she again married and this was to Ludwig Greagor. Olive and John Andrews had a son they named John and several daughters but I have forgotten their names. I know one was working for the welfare dept in Knox County, IL, when she retired. Clara and Orion Hoak had three children, Lloyd, Erma, Helen. Lloyd married Esther Rigler, Erma married Vern Hopkins, and Helen married Earl Eikenberry. Lloyd and Esther had three children, Lyle, Arden, and Dean. All three have passed away at this time. Lyle never married but Arden and Dean did. Arden had four children, Keith, Ardith, Patricia, and Paul. Keith runs the business that his father started in Houston, Texas, and Ardith and Paul still live in Houston. Patricia has moved to one of the suburbs, Pasadena. Dean Hoak, had two children, Bruce and Kyra. Bruce is an MD in College Station, TX, and Kyra is an RN working as school nurse in the Colleyville, TX system. Erma and Vern Hopkins had four children, Vernon, Donald, Helen, and Ruth. Vernon was a Primitive Baptist minister and is now deceased. Donald, is retired and living with his daughter in Wichita, KS. Helen is recently widowed and living in Bentley, IL and Ruth is retired from working in the Hancock County Treasurer's Office. Helen and Earl Eikenberry had one son only, Richard Eikenberry. I attended his last concert at Carnige Hall in 1996 and he lives in New York City and is partially retired. He teaches a couple of courses at New York University yet and plays the organ and sings at couple of masses at a Catholic Church close to his home--even though he is a Mennonite Brethern. Clara Hoaks boarding house was at the SW corner of the Central Grade School block and the Brethern Church was at the NE corner in Sterling. OK.....
Now for the decendandts of Maggie (Journey)and Robert Bursk Sr. I believe they were married in Sterling but I am only guessing. They had several children I believe but the one I am most familiar with is Bob Bursk Jr, who married Lena Schultz. They had several children whose names appear in the list that you posted. Delbert and Elsie never married Bob did and although I met him a few times back in the fifties, I never know his family. Robert SR's family lived just north of Garden City, KS, almost on the county line of Finney County and Scott County and his one daughter married a neighbor boy named Simmons. They had at least two daughters, Alberta and Arletta. Alberta married Adam Rupp and Loretta married Ed Cheney. Alberta died a few years ago and Adam is now living in Old Fort Dodge Soldiers Home. Loretta and Ed Cheney are living on a farm in Scott County, about five miles south of Scott City, KS. Anna lives in Grand Junction, CO. I have not seen her since Delbert's funeral but have sent a Christmas card every year and none have been returned but I no longer receive one from her. In proof reading this I find that I have written about the Bob Bursks in a confusing way. There were two Bob Bursk. Joseph and Maggie had a son they named Bob. He married Lena and they had a son they named Bob Jr. Delbert, Bob Jr., and Adam Rupp were all in the army during World War II. Now about Leroy Schultz... Leroy was married to Erma (?). Can't remember her maiden name but I know that she went to the same Brethern Church in Sterling where my mother went. Most people referred to Leroy as "Bill." For several years he ran a truck stop and then said he felt a calling to "preach the gospel" and he sold the truck stop and went down to Kentucky to attend a seminary to train Southern Baptist preachers. He was ordained and beginning to preach in Oakton, KY. While operating the truck stop he and Erma and their children lived next door to family named Grim. Mr. Grim was a likable guy when sober but he frequently was not sober. He put his wife in the hospital a couple of times with broken ribs as well as most of her teeth. Mrs. Grim would sometimes escape to the Schultz residence next door and Bill would meet Mr. Grim and explain to him what was going to happen if he tried to set foot in the house to take his wife home. The Grim boys referred the neighbors as Uncle Bill and Auntie Erma. The Grims were divorced and Mr. Grim ran off to Florida to keep from paying any child support. To make a long story a little bit shorter, I met Mrs Grim a few years later and proposed marriage. She insisted that we go to Oakton, KY, and be married there. Of course we went that route and our two families were always close friends. When my wife died in 1981, Bill conducted the graveside services. A couple of years later when talking about Kansas I mentioned that I was now stationed in Garden City, KS. He commented that he had relation living there. I said that I probably did not know them but what was there name. He said, "Bursk. You know I believe that Elsie Bursk was the most beautiful woman I ever saw." Erma whacked him over the head with a newspaper and said, "that is a terrible thing to say in front of your wife!" Elsie and Delbert's mother was a sister to Bill's mother. My mother's cousins were also Bill's cousins. Well, if you have read this far I admire you tenacity! But it is now 2:15 AM. I will proofread this one more time and send it. As tired as I am I will probably miss my mistakes. Gator
