The TAHS president (and coordinator for the R. R. Birthplace) is trying to find specific information on the bakery located below the apartment where Reagan was born. It later became the 1st National Bank. This building was located on the East side of Main Street. We are not sure if there were more than one bakery in town at the time. Any photos or articles pinpointing location would be very helpful. Joan writes: "Hi Denise, Do you suppose there could be a question put on the website regarding the Bakery that was housed below the Birthplace Apartment? In some of the early Tornadoes there are spot ads regarding the Ekdahl Bakery (don't know if that is the same or not), but it would have fit the time frame of the Reagans. It would be so great if we could come up with info on that bakery and there might be some more info in the Tornadoes, and also pictures."
Information in the Nat'l Register of Historic Places Inventory-Nomination Form notes the following information: "111 S. Main (Ronald Reagan Birthplace) was built in 1896 for G. W. Stauffer. Ronald Reagan was born in the 2nd floor apartment on February 6, 1911. The REagan family lived here from October 1, 1906 to May 5, 1911. The first floor housed a tavern from 1896 to 1915 and a bakery from 1915 to 1919. It served as the home of the 1st National Bank (1919-1931). Former owner and bank president R. F. Woods served as Mayor of Tampico )1913-1917)."

I hope that these articles I transcribed from the Tampico Tornado may help add a bit to the "Bakery Business" in Tampico during the early years of last century.
These are the only articles mentioning "bakery" that I transcribed (there are probably other articles waiting for me!)
It appears there was only one bakery in town from 1900 thru 1907, that belonging to Vic EKDAHL, with the apparent exception of a period around 1904 when Fred SHANKS also established a bakery in town.
It appears that Vic sold his bakery in December 1906; however, a few short month's later, it looks like he had his old bakery back.
I am not sure what took place between 1907 and 1915; however, in 1915 Harry DUNN was selling the bakery to John COOLEY. Two years later I.J. BOOZ, andddddd... it was I.J. BOOZ that was in ownership of the bakery when it moved into the building that was occupied by the 1st National Bank. The year was 1920.
Below are the corresponding articles I've transcribed. Les Niemi
August 30, 1902 F.L. PIERCE has hired Mr. CORENTH a Chicago baker, to handle the dough in his bakery. He is said to be an excellent baker.
January 31, 1903 F.L. PIERCE sold his bakery business Thursday to V.C. ECKDAHL who took immediate possession. Mr. PIERCE has conducted the bakery successfully for the past six months and in retiring is undecided as to what he will do. Mr. ECKDAHL is a young man, a hustler and one who ought to succeed.
December 4, 1903 William FARR has leased the small building next to EKDAHL's bakery and will conduct a book and nonion [sic] store there. He expects to open up for business some time next week.
December 25, 1903 I have bought Geo. LUTYEN's loom and complete weaving outfit and have located in the building next to the bakery. If you want good weaving call. Wm. FARR.
July 15, 1904 My bakery is now in full operation and I am baking fine bread, pies, cakes, etc., daily. Try some of my fine bread. For sale at the bakery or at McBRIDE's lunch counter. Fred SHANKS.
July 13, 1906 Miss Eunice McCLURE is working at EKDAHL's bakery while Minnie EMMONS is taking a vacation.
December 21, 1906 HARTSOOK Buys Store Jacob HARTSOOK has joined Tampico's mercantile ranks, Tuesday he purchased V.C. EKDAHL's bakery and will take possession January 1. He intends to hire a good baker and conduct his own clerking as Miss Minne EMMONS will stop January 1. Mr. EKDAHL, the retiring proprietor has conducted the business successfully for several years and will probably now move away and work at his trade in another town.
May 31, 1907 Vic EKDAHL has put together a new bottom in the oven at his bakery and he can do a much better job baking now than formerly.
August 2, 1907 JACKSON’s Philadelphia Ice Cream is the best in town, get it at EKDAHL’s bakery, also the finest bread, pies cakes and cookies baked fresh every day. Be sure and get prices before buying elsewhere. EKDAHL’s is the place.
August 5, 1915 John COOLEY Buys Restaurant Harry DUNN sold his restaurant and bakery business last week to Mr. and Mrs. John H. COOLEY who took possession at once and are conducting the business successfully. Mr. and Mrs. DUNN quit the business on account of her and her daughter's health. They have enjoyed a good business and conducted a first class bakery. The new firm treated their customers and friends.
March 1, 1917 Mr. and Mrs. I.J. BOOZ will take charge of the COOLEY bakery Thursday which they recently purchased. They have moved their household goods from Denrock to Tampico and are conveniently located above the bakery. Tampico people regret to see Mr. and Mrs. John H. COOLEY retire from business but will extend welcome to the new firm.
July 1, 1920 I.J. BOOZ plans on moving July 2 and 3 his bakery and restaurant into the building now occupied by The First National Bank which will move about the same time to the building now occupied by Mr. BOOZ and which has been purchased by the bank. Mr. BOOZ will move into the bank building only temporarily and expects to move into the store room now occupied by COOK's pool hall about Aug. 1.

We have a Fire Map of the town for 1910 and 1921. The 1910 map confirms this info. The Bank and Bakery switched places from west/east side. In 1910, the building with the Reagan Apartment was a Rest./Bakery owned by Harry Dunn. The 1st Nat'l was across the street on the west side of Main street. The bank moved over to east side and the bakery moved into the old bank.
However, it also shows another bakery on the west side owned by "Mr. Booz." This was in operation at the same time as the Rest/Bakery owned by Mr. Dunn on the East side of Main Street in 1910. I'll read through the 1910 "Special Boom Edition" of the Tornado and see what it says (if anything). Someone also mentioned they thought the town was "dry" in those early years(there are no saloons listed on the 1910 map)m which means the Nat'l Registry information is incorrect! Very interesting. Thank you very much, Les! ---------- Denise Family History Coordinator Tampico Area Historical Society
