I have found more information on Alexander Thompson and his wife Mary Sanders. It's stated in his obit from Traer, Iowa that the Thompson family moved to Tampico around 1879 from Elgin, IL. They had immigrated from Scotland in 1872. Alexander married Mary Sanders in 1882 in Tampico. Mary died in 1911 in Prophetstown and is buried in the Tampico Cemetery. His father was Alexander and his mother was Henrietta. Are there any records of the people living in the area, like a city directory for this time period? Is there an obit for Mary? Mary's parents were Frederick and Adeline Sanders. They may have lived in the Tampico area, too.

Pattt,
I will try to get over to the museum this weekend and look for marriage and death notices for Mary. Will also see if she is in our funeral log, but may not be if she died in P-town. Will get back to you.

Hi Patty,
I got through about 4 months of 1911 TORNADO newspapers. (it sure would be helpul to have apecific date of death for Mary). She is not in our funeral log. So far, no obit. There is no "obit" section in these old newspapers, so I have to skim through the whole paper to try to find mention of a death. I'll try to get back over to musuem later this week and continue search. (This is not a problem and I am not complaining, just letting you know why it is taking me so long!)

You asked if there were city directories for that time period. We only have the merchant directories listed elsewhere on this site. I think the years are 1902 & 1914. You could check with Marilyn at the Sterliing Library for other directories that may have been available. I looked for Mary's obit the first time you inquired and said I could not find an obit for her, but will look again. You said you found "new" information on Alexander from the IA obit, but everything you posted was also in his IL obit that I gave you and also posted on site. Was wondering if there were anything else that may help us find an obit on Mary in the IA obit?

See the first message thread you started on this family in July:

Denise,
My new information was some of the dates. In the Traer obit it states that the Thompson family moved to Elgin around 1879 and that they emigrated from Scotland in 1872. I think the marriage date for Mary and Alexander was also new - 1882 in Tampico. The obit that you posted said Mary died in 1910 and the Traer obit said she died in Prophetstown in 1911. It's possible the date and place are incorrect. If they were living in Tampico area why was she in Prophetstown at the time of her death?

Also my great aunt Myrtle Sanders married Charles Short a riverboar pilot from Albany, IL. Myrtle was born in Tampico on April 30, 1895. I see that someone was looking for information on the Short family. There are several Short's including an Ira Short mentioned in the book "Trailways to Albany" by Helen M. Hanson.

The reason I asked about a city directory was because of the post that mentioned Misses Sanders were opening a millinery store on March 18, 1899. I was curious about their first names.

Finally where and what was Sodtown?

Thanks,
Patty

I can't believe B. J. hasn't answered your "sodtown" question. That was the nickname for Thomas (Bureau Co., IL). ;>) As for the immigration date, I guess I just deduced the 1872 from Alexander's obit posted on your first thread for this family:
"Alexander THOMPSON was born in Glasgow, Scotland, Nov. 14, 1864 and passed away June 7, 1934 at the age of 69 years. 6 months and 26 days. He was the second son of Alexander and Henrietta Thompson who came to America when he was 8 years of age. They made their home around Elgin until he reached the age of 14 when he came to Tampico to work and remained here until his marriage to Mary SANDERS of Albany, Ill. where they made their home. To this union nine children were born, six of whom are living. His wife passed away in 1910."

Don't think I had the marriage date tho. I'm going over to museum again today, so will continue looking for Mary's obit. I don't think it is unusual that she may have passed away in P-town. It's just a stone's throw from here (about 12 miles to actual town - closer for outskirts/farms, etc).

IL STATE ARCHIVES SHOWS MARRIAGE AS FOLLOWS:
THOMPSON, ALEXANDER SAUNDERS, MARY 09/23/1883 000/0000 00002550 KANE

I'll peruse through some old papers and see if there are any advertisements for their Milinery shop.

Denise,
If Mary Sanders is buried in the Tampico Cemetery, isn't her exact death date on the stone? Or just the year? Or isn't there a stone? Has anyone looked in the court house death records in Morrison?
Also, on the Wetzell Cemetery (Hume), have you tried talking with any of the Wetzell's in the area? There are quite a few of them, and maybe one of them may remember something about the cemetery.

Hi Janet,
As for Mrs.(Mary) Thompson, the confusion lies with the stone vs. her husband's obit. Stone says 1911 (no month or day). I have been going through all of the 1911 TORNADO newspapers, looking for an obit.

As for the Wetzell Cemetery (Old Hume), I will eventually check with them. I go past that cemetery almost everyday and have been wanting to photograph the graves for years. I had my camera with me, so I took what I could before my floppy filled up. The majority of our church members are Wetzells, so I will eventually ask them about it. It's kind of a running joke - I am still learning the names of all of the members of our church. I always say, if in doubt, just call them Mr. or Mrs. Wetzell - I will have over a 50/50 chance of being correct! Great to have so many around. I should be able to get some answers!

Morrison will be my last resort for Mary's death date. I have given Patty the contacts for Morrison listed on our site if she wants to contact them herself. Thanks for your suggestions.
