Prior to putting this site in my favorites, I would Google Tampico and scroll down to find it. Today I noticed there is an entry in Wikipedia for Tampico. When I opened that site it not only mentions Ronald Reagan and Adm. Reeves, but also Grant Wendland. Supposedly he is famous for ridding Tampico of its enormous amount of stray cats in the 1940s. I wondered if he was famoous enough to make Wikipedia, why had I never heard of him while growing up in Tampico. Has anyone else out there heard of this guy?

I'll ask Mary W. if she knows of him. I'm glad they updated the Wikapedia site. I sent in the info on Adm. Reeves about a year ago! The BEST news is that you put us in your "favorites." Thank you! ---------- Denise Family History Coordinator Tampico Area Historical Society

Hello Milo,
Here is the info you were talking about: Tampico is the hometown of local legend Grant Wendland. Legend has it that Grant Wendland rid the town of its overwhelming stray cat population in the 1940's. To do so, he attached a mechanical device to a bike (one tire street ready, the other off-road ready) with a sound similar to that of a violent, rabid badger.
It was also the birthplace of Admiral Joseph M. Reeves.

I asked Mrs. Wendland about this and she said it is a "hoax" perhaps by one of her son's friends. There were no other Wendlands (to her knowledge) in this area at that time. The information has been removed.
