Hello All (especially Les!), We will be representing Mary Berge Howlett in our Tampico Memorial Cemetery Walk on May 28, 2007. I have her obit and a few photos, but very little information on her or her family. If you could contribute any info on Mary and the Berge family line, it would be greatly appreciated. We have some photos submitted by a family member that also spelled the name BIRGE. Here is her obit: 1951 - Mary L. (Berge) Howlett Tampico Tornado, Thursday, March 8, 1951
MARY L. HOWLETT LAID AT REST
Funeral Services for Mrs. Mary L. HOWLETT were held in Parent's Chapel, Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Appropriate recordings, including a vocal number, "The Lord's Prayer," were played preceding the service which was conducted by Eugene MORGAN, pastor of the church of Christ.
Mrs. MORGAN read Psalms46 and two poems, "A Friend" and "Someday" and made brief comments on her life.
Mrs. Nim Gosney and Mrs. Edward FULLERTON were in charge of the many beautiful flowers.
Burial was in the Tampico Memorial Cemetery with Edward FULLERTON, Willard HUNTER, Wm. FURRY, R. J. HARMS, J. J. KEPNER, and Raymond FOY serving as Pallbearers.
The business houses closed during the services as a mark of respect.
Mary Louise HOWLETT was born May 16, 1869 in Fairfield Township, Bureau County, the daughter of George and Margaret BERGE and lived in the vicinity of Tampico all of her life. She attended the Thomas school.
On December 1, 1887, she married John R. HOWLETT (Jr.) who preceded her in death in 1905. One daughter, Ethel, was born to this union.
Mrs. HOWLETT, who had been in poor health for some time, passed away Sunday morning, March 4, in the home of her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. M. H. PARENT, with whom she lived.
She was president of the Tampico Memorial Cemetery Association, for many years and was very active in the management of the organizationu until her recent illness.
Besides her daughter, she is survived by one sister, Mrs. Emma RUCK, of Alto, Michigan. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and one sister, Mrs. Carrie ANDERSON.
IL Marriages show the following: Illinois Marriages, 1851-1900 Illinois Marriages, 1851-1900 Name: George Berge Gender: Male Spouse Name: Margaret L. Landwher Marriage Date: Nov 08, 1867 Marriage County: Henry Comments: This record can be found at the County Court Records, Film # 1435944 - 1435945.
Thank you for any help you can provide.

May 29, 1886 PICNIC Last Saturday, Mr. George BERGE, teacher of the Sodtown school, held a picnic and invited the Fairfield Center school and teacher to join him also the school over which Miss Ida BANES rules with gentle dignity. The Center teacher Miss Jennie DEITS took nearly all of her school with her and though the youngest teacher we were all proud of her. All schools did their teachers great credit in recitation, declamations, singing and deportment. Lemonade was freely given by Mr. G. BERGE, while a sumptuous dinner was served by the ladies. We were all well pleased by Rev. Mr. STRINGER in his short speech which filled the children's heart with glee, as his illustrations and anecdotes will long be remembered by them. One little by said "Mamma, I know he is a good man, for he and his wife are so happy looking." There is no sight more pleasant than large shade trees with their wealth of shadows thrown over a grass plot dotted with pretty children. Mr. BERGE did us all a favor when he generously invited us to share with hime this first picnic of the season.
February 21, 1891 Having sold my business to Chas. F. SIPPLE, and wishing to square up my books, I request all persons knowing themselves to be indebted to me, to call at once and settle by cash or note. George BERGE, Tampico, Ill., Feb. 12, 1891.

BUNKER; collector, T.J. BERGE; com. of highways, Geo. BURDEN; trustees of school, John N. HOGEBOOM and W.M. BROOKS. L.W. BROWN, the present supervisor, holds over.
June 17, 1893 There was a dance out at BERGE's new barn, two miles southwest of here, last Saturday evening. The attendance was large, and the music was excellent. ALLEN's Gem Orchestra presided.

September 22, 1905 DIES VERY SUDDENLY John R. HOWLETT, Jr., Promient Business Man Dies of Heart Disease. John R. HOWLETT, Jr. a prominent hardware merchant and a member of the city council died very suddenly of heart trouble. Death came with terrible swiftness as he was about his usual locations during the day and possessing a rugged constitution his death was entirely unexpected and unlooked for. That he had passed away could scarcely be credited in this country until the awful fact was known. He was not feeling in hs usual good health Wednesday having had a billous attack but was not sick. He spent the day at his hardware store attending to his business and spent the evening at the Tampico club room when he seemed in the usual health. On going home he bathed his feet xxxr which he laid down on the sofa and was taken with sharp pains in the chest. A physician was summoned hastily and while the latter was disolving a hypodermic tablet for an infection, Mr. HOWLETT threw up his arms and expired. John R. HOWLETT was born forty-two years ago next December 7, in Fairfield township south of Tampico where his boyhood days were spent with his parents on the old farm. He wa married seventeen years ago to Mary BERGE and after his marriage lived on the farm two years, after which he entered in the partnership with F.J. ANDERSON in the general store at New Bedford. He then came here and entered into the hardware business with his brother George which partnership continued until about four years ago sincewhich he as conducted the business alone. The prostrated was one of the best businessmen of the village and enjoyed a good trade. Of a genial, pleasant disposition he had many friends who are shocked by his sudden xxx xxx xxx xxx Woxxx xx Knights of the Globe and village council, carrying $2,000 in the Aetna. Everbody is greiving with the stricken wife and daughter, and no death has produced such a shock in the community. Words cannot express the sorrow felt in the sudden taking of this good man which is a direct loss to the village as he was a citizen whose record and deeds were for the betterment of the community. No definite funeral arrangements have been made other than it will be held Sunday. What disposition will be made of the hardware store is not known yet. The deceased was one of a family of eleven and a son of John HOWLETT, Sr.
April 13, 1906 NOTICE I have made arrangements with Ernest McKENZIE to take all the horses he has so there won't be any horses in the adjoining pastures. E.C. BERGE.
February 8, 1907 To Be Married Soon Invitations are out announcing the marriage of Miss Olga BERGE near Yorktown to Mr. George SANDROCK on Wednesday evening, February 20, 1907 at six o'clock. The prospective bride is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Theodore BERGE and is a splendid young lady who is xxx xxxx xx numerous friends. The prospective groom, Mr. George SANDROCK, is a gentleman who is well liked in the vicinity where he resides and is a hustler.
August 17, 1916 Mr. and Mrs. George BERGE returned from their visit with their daughter, Mrs. John RUCK at Grand Rapids, Mich., which they report is a fine city with many attractions and that the RUCKs are well pleased with their new home there.
May 8, 1919 Mr. and Mrs. Frank ANDERSON and children, of Rock Island, came Saturday afternoon to spend a few days with theri parents, Mr. and Mrs. George BERGE, and her sister, Mrs. Mary HOWLETT. Mrs. ANDERSON was taken sick while here and could not return with the family.

Mrs. HOWLETT does not like California very well and says that it was extremely hot there when she left. She visited M.G. FRANCE and wife at San Bernadino and says they were well and happy and doing nicely in a grocery store.

I am trying to figure out WHO the sister is AND who is Mrs. Frank Heintzelman in the following articals: July 11, 1903 Mrs. Frank HEINTZELMAN and two children from Joliet, Ill., are here visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. John HOWLETT. (If this is John Howlett, Jr. & Mary (Berge), their only daughter was Ethel, who married McKenzie "Mack" Parent. In the next article, it refers to a sister of Mrs. Howlett. This Mrs. Howlett would be Mary nee: Berge. I only know of two sisters, one, Emma, married a Ruck and the other, Carolyn "Carrie" an Anderson)
August 15, 1903 Mr. and Mrs. John HOWLETT and daughter, Ethel, visited Mrs. HOWLETT's sister at Joliet this week.
Can anyone from this family line fill me in please? ---------- Denise Family History Coordinator Tampico Area Historical Society

Mrs. Frank (actually, I think his given name was David Frank) HEINTZELMAN was Esther Ann nee HOWLETT, sister of John R. Jr. HOWLETT (husband of Mary nee BERGE).
Their parents were John R. Sr., and Ruhama nee AYERS HOWLETT and their other siblngs were: Mary Martha (m Peter K. JOHNSON), George Washington (m Elizabeth RUCK), Ella (Ellen) died in infancy, Oliver (m Phoebe Ann THOMPSON), Charles D. (m ????), Alice Nettie (m James Albert THOMPSON bro of Phoebe Ann), Patience Astrep (m Charles EMERY), Elizabeth, Mary Maria (m Charles ROGERS), and Frank William (m Anna Elizabeth "Lizzie" KLOBES).

Ahhh, that explains a lot - thanks! She was John's sister, not Mary's. And thanks for the tip on Frank's name. There were a few "Frank Heintzelman's" on census records, but there was also a David F, and I think that is also how they are listed on the IL State archives marriage index.
Thanks again for all of your help. Don't know what we would do without you!!!

Does anyone know the siblings of George Berge? I wonder if a relative of mine Christina Berge Sippel is related, because they came from Germany and settled near Hooppole also in 1865. So there must be a connection, and I have yet to find one. Bette

I know very little about my grandfather and his family, but think he came from Tampico or Prophetstown, IL. His name was Jess James Howlett and was well into his 80's when he died in 1968 or early 1969 in Prescott, AZ. He was married to Zora Jackson for over 60 years, but think her family lived in Rock Island, IL. My father took us to Tampico (or Prophetstown) when we were small to meet my grandfather's sister. I think her name or nickname was something like Icie and her husband ran a car dealership. This would have been sometime in the 1950's.
I would appreciate any information that anyone could give me. Thanks so much.

Hi Denise,
Thanks for the info. I checked with the Prescott Courier (newspaper where my grandfather worked) and got information from Jess James Howlett's obituary.
It listed a surviving sister at that time to be Nellie Brewer. In checking the information about Nellie Brewer, I found that she was a daughter of George Washington Howlett and Elizabeth Ruck. I am assuming that they may be my great-grandparents. No parents were listed in Jess' obituary. I have read alot of the information that is posted about the Howlett family and have also checked with the Whiteside website and I also am assuming that We are descendants of John R Howlett Sr. and Ruhama nee Ayers Howlett.
I would also like to know more about Elizabeth Ruck Howlett. I am just getting into this genealogy thing and think I am hooked already!
Thanks again, Pam

Nellie nee HOWLETT BREWER was the dau of George Washington & Elizabeth "Bessie" nee RUCK HOWLETT. I have her siblings as Glenn HOWLETT and Isaphin M. nee HOWLETT m Raymond Victor ROLLO. I don't have a listing for Jesse James HOWLETT, however.
From Nellie Dell & Buel Austin BREWER's wedding announcement in the Tampico Tornado:
November 20, 1913 Miss Nellie HOWLETT Bride of Buel BREWER Miss Nellie D. HOWLETT and Buel A. BREWER surprised their many friends by being quietly married at the home of her father, G.W. HOWLETT, Wednesday evening at 8 o'clock by Rev. C.D. McCAMMON, the M.E. minister, only the families of the contracting parties being present. The wedding march was played by Miss Jessie ROLLO, a niece of the bride and the ceremony was performed in the parlor which had been decorated nicely with carnations and plants. After the usual congratulations had been extended a fine two course lap supper was served. The bride is the youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. G.W. HOWLETT and is a young lady of much ability who has made Tampico her home all her life except spending winters in the south with her parents. She attended the Tampico High School and was graduated from Mountain City College at Chattanooga, Tenn. For a short time she has been an assisting at LAMON's Photography Gallery. The groom is the oldest son of Mr. and Mrs. M.P. BREWER of Prophetstown and is a fine young man of good habits. He was born and raised in Prophetstown, is a graduate of Prophetstown High School an also of BROWN's Business College of Sterling. Both the bride and groom are very popular among the young people of their towns. They left Thursday morning on the passenger train for a trip to Chicago and on their return they will be at home after Jan. 1 in Prophetstown.
Can you please post the obit for Jessie James?
Thanks, Les

Here are some Jesse HOWLETT articles I found in the Tampico Tornado:
June 8, 1901 Jesse HOWLETT showed us a fine photo of the ALLEN Orchestra that LAMON had taken. There is seven members in the orchestra and they were at Joe TEACHes [sic] when the picture was taken. The scene is from the parlor and the musicians sit in a semicircle. They are Fred ALLEN, Jesse HOWLETT, Burdette JACKSON, Bennie BRAINERD, Newton DENISON and Robert ALDRICH.
November 13, 1903 Chief of deputies, Geo. B. JACKSON, Geo., LAMON, Mrs. Marvin ALDRICH, Miss Zora JACKSON and Jesse HOWLETT went to Prophetstown Monday night where they assisted in the initiation of thirty-three members in the F.L.A. lodge.
June 24 1904 Harry AUMETN, who has been employed as a printer in the Tornado office for the past three years, severs his connections with the office Saturday and will move to Sterling where he has accepted a better position with better pay in Brion & Ward's job printing office. Jesse HOWLETT of Tampico will take the place made vacant by Mr. AUMENT.
November 23, 1906 Jesse HOWLETT of Walnut spent Sunday here visiting his wife and parents.
February 15, 1907 Mr. and Mrs. Floyd HOWLETT and son Gerald of Thomas visited at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Jesse HOWLETT Monday and Tuesday.

Les, Thanks so much for the information. This is definitely my grandfather. He was a pressman by trade and was also a musician as was my dad and my dad's brother. Also Burdette Jackson was my grandmother's brother, also a musician. I am assuming that Geo. B. Jackson listed in the other article was my Great-Grandfather, but I think that my grandmother's brother's full name was that also.
I assumed that the Jackson's were from Rock Island, IL but evidently moved there at a later time. I do know that the Jacksons including my grandmother were buried at the Chippianock Cemetery in Rock Island. As to Jesse, he is buried at Mountain View Cemetery in Prescott, AZ.
All of Jesse and Zora's children are deceased and I have lost contact with Evora Howlett Burmeister's children.
I do have contact with 2 of George B Howlett's children.
I can't begin to tell you how much this wealth of information means to me. Thanks again. Pam

Denise,
Thanks again. This all seems to fit with what I know about my grandfather and my father's immediate family. I again am assuming that maybe Isaphine Rollo is the person that my dad took us to visit and was his aunt. I found listed an obituary for Raymond V. Rollo that said he did run a car dealership as I remembered.

Les & Denise,
In the information about Nellie Brewer there is a brother listed as Glenn. I checked with my mother as to where they came up with my brother's middle name - Glenn and her reply was that it was my dad's uncle's name and that at some time he lived in either Moline, IL or Davenport, IA to her recollection.
I asked her is she had remembered anything about dad's grandfather remarrying, since Elizabeth Ruck Howlett had died in 1897. I have a postcard to my father postmarked from Prophetstown dated Nov. 1917 signed Grand Pa & Ma Howlett. She said that dad told her that his Grandma Howlett was actually his step-grandmother. If anyone has any information, I would appreciate it.
Thanks for all the great info. Pam

Here's what I found in my Tornado transcriptions:
August 15, 1903 Mrs. Geo. HOWLETT entertained her sister and niece, Mrs. RICHARDSON and Miss Frances RICHARDSON, from Belleville, Mich.
September 16, 1904 Mr. and Mrs. Geo. HOWLETT and son Glenn and daughter, and Mr. and Mrs. Ray ROLLO of Thomas will leave Sept. 27 for Wallis, Texas, where they will make their future homes.
June 24, 1915 Miss Jennie ROLLO of Thomas has been visiting her grandprents, Mr. and Mrs. Geo. HOWLETT, in Tampico and also with her aunt, Mrs. Buel BREWER, at Prophetstown.
August 26, 1920 After a two weeks vacation at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Geo. HOWLETT and their many friends, Mr. and Mrs. Glenn HOWLETT returned to their home in Atwater, Ohio, and will there take up their usual work, she as a teacher in the High school and he as cashier in a bank.
Ok, so George was married again - maybe Denise look into the 1920 census and can find a first name for his 2nd wife and we can tie that to the RICHARDSON name.

What are the chances that Raymond V. Rollo, was aka, Pluck Rollo, who was in the Chevy dealership with Forest C. Pritchard in Prophetstown? They were on the East side of Mainstreet and about the North end.

Greetings! Late night searching has brought me to this message board. I am the son of Evora L. Burmeister (Howlett),deceased, the daughter of Jesse and Zora Howlett, who were my grandparents. I do have limited information about them if needed. I want to thank all of you for your posts, I also remember mom talking about Burdette (sp). I believe she had a brother living in Tucson (same person?) I still live in the Prescott area, and again, thank you for my new found education.

Hi Burmie & Pam - I have emailed you both with each others emails. Best of luck sharing your treasures with each other. Be sure to sign up for our "e-newsletter" on this site to keep posted on updates on the message board or family names. Otherwise, stop back often and do a name search (Home Page) for new additions.
