Trying to find out what schools were in Hume Township and where they were located in the late 1800's or early 1900's? Any good sources?

Thank you,

James Griffith is said to have taught the first school in the township, in 1857. A school-house had just been completed in the Cleaveland neighborhood, and in this house was held the first shcool. Accrding to the report of the Superintendent of Public Schools, the township is divided into six school districts, with one brick and five frame school-houses, valued at $6,400. There were in June, 1884, under the age of 21 years, 356 persons, of whom 257 were over six, with an enrollment of 196. The wages paid ranged from $25 to $50 per month. The tax levy for school purposes was $1,315.

The first school in the township was taught by Miss Jane Griffith in 1857, in what is known as the Cleaveland school house. This school had just been completed when Miss Griffith commenced her school, and was the first one erected in the township. Now there are six school - school buildings, known as the Hume, East Hume, Hume Center, Morse, Perry, and Cleaveland. All of these are good edjfices, and well furnished with improved seats and proper school apparatus. Schools are taught nine months during the year.

Thank you Denise. My great grandmother's obit says she attended school in Hume Twp. so I am trying to find out the name of the school she went to. My father may have gone to the same school as a boy. It is located at the end of Knief Road not far from the canal and is a residence today. I am forgetting at the moment the name of the road that goes by the Wakeman farm. The road runs north and south and Knief Road makes it a "T" so you have to turn either north or south off of Knief and the school is at the "T". Do you know what the name of that school was?

Patty,
We have a great map that shows many of the schools. I'll try to get over there tomorrow. If I can, I'll scan it for you.

Patty,
It doesn't show up on the map that I have. However, Tim (my hubby) knows where it is and we are going to go take a picture of it tonight. It is a private residence, as you stated and is for sale! I think COOPER's live in it now. Will get back with particulars and photo to make sure we are talking about the same school.

Hi Patty,
I was mistaken about the school mentioned in above post. I asked Paul Kaiser - our resident "encyclopedia". He was not sure where Knief Rd. was. He knew of a school residence in that vicinity, but couldn't remember the name of it. When it "comes to him," he'll let me know. It's rare that he doesn't remember anything!

Of course, I'll post if I find out.

OK - Now I see where you are talking about. Ridge Rd/Knief Rd. That would be a little east of the "Cleaveland" area, so you are probably correct in assuming it would have been E. Hume. As far as I know, there were only the N/E/W/Center Hume schools and Cleaveland school in Hume Twp. I don't know of the two mentioned in the Hume History known as Perry & Morse school. One of the schools was at the "four-mile corner." It is a cornfield now, across from the Wetzell home where the stop sign is at Star & Tampico Rd. I thought that one was just called HUME school. I could be wrong and I will ask Paul or one of our long-time residents. As for the school records - there is no designated archive place. However, we could possibly have the teachers ledgers at our place, upstairs in the little "school room." Why don't you come over and rummage through the old books?

I can do it, but it will be a while. I had a short stint in the hospital again, so I am so far behiind on research, emails, etc. This weekend is the THS Alumni Dinner and I will have the historical society open for them. You could probably get to the records sooner than I can right now. Besides, it would be nice to see you & Roger again. (smile)

There are many school records for our one room country schools at the Regional Superintendents office in Sterling right next to Newman High School. I have been there several times to get information about the schools that I attended and the one that my mother taught in. There is a nice map on the wall that shows where they were all located. I have been putting some of these in a book at the Prophetstown Historical Museum. Arlene Oncken from Morrison has done a lot of work about the rural schools in Whiteside County and there is some information on them in the Morrison Library.
