Leon Cemetery listing, 1876 - 1939. My sister was here (lives in Texas)a couple of weeks ago for a brief visit, and we were looking at some of the data I have put in my family file on our maternal side of the family. I happened to show her the file on Neva May FORWARD, who married Otis W. Richards. Otis and May are resting in the old portion of the Leon cemetery, and I believe it's plot #22.
I have it that Neva May Forward was born here in Whiteside, 28 June 1876. She was the daughter of William Forward and wife, Arabella Lincoln Burnham. Her older sister was Sarah Edith (Forward) Teach, my great-grandmother. Neva May married Otis 2 Dec., 1903.
When my sister seen the death year as 1939, she asked how sure I was, so I showed her the Leon records. Something she said is wrong, as she understood that we were talking about Aunt May, and that she remembered her (late 40's - 50's)and that she recalled that Aunt May had a close friendship with Clark Lane. Now I know why a newspaper article about Clark Lane's 90th. was in my Grandfathers scrape book.
I drove out to the cemetery this evening, and I find the death year for May Richards (wife of Otis W.) is 1959 on the stone. I was some 15 years old at that time, but I can only faintly recall the term Aunt May, but don't remember her as I older sister did.

Clark Lane is actually William Clark Lane and was married to Fannie May Fee. He was born 28 May 1876 and died 25 Jun 1970. He was known as Clark so as not to be confused with his father William Lane. Father's bio found here:

Both Clark and Fannie are buried in the Leon cemetery. Also I would be interested in getting a copy (transcribed is fine) of the newspaper clipping about his 90th birthday. Clark is in my direct line.
Thanks, Gail

Hi Gail, Is the article in the Sterling Gazette, or the Tampico Tornado? I would be happy to transcribe it from the Tornado (we have them on site). It may be a while before I can get to the Sterling Library to transcribe a Gazette article. (But I know someone who DOES get there more often, if she is reading this - smile).
I'll check our papers this weekend when I am at the historical society.

Dear Gail and Denise,
Clark's 90th., (May 28th., 1966) was done by the Prophetstown Echo, Sat. May 21st., 1966. It also has a picture - Clark on the Oliver tracker, and son Paul and his wife standing in the foreground. The article is some 10 rather short paragraphs in length. I would be glad to type it out, but maybe Denise could help me with your address by private eMail, and I'll send a complete copy. Then if you wish it could be put on line.
I have a note at the bottom of the article that Fannie passed away in 52. I'll take a peek at the Leon cemetery records upon closing this.
I worked for Paul for a few days back in my teens, and several of the neighbors. I'll always Clark coming out to the farm driving his black Ford down the road like it was Daytona.
