Hello all,

A question I asked Denise was if the Prophetstown Cemetery was still there? If not was it moved to Riverside Cemetery, Prophetstown? She suggested I place my question on the message boards.

I have one member of a family whose obit says he was buried in Prophetstown Cemetery, but all other members are buried in Riverside Cemetery, Prophetstown including his wife. Are these two separate cemeteries or was one moved into the other, or are they one in the same with just the name being changed?

Took me forever in a day to realize that there are two Riverside Cemeteries, Sterling & P-Town. Then thanks to the cemetery listings I was able to correct my blunder and get the right relatives in the right cemeteries.

Confused in CA,
Gail

Gail,
I emailed Janet Goodell - from Prophetstown Historical Society. She's a busy lady, but I'm sure she'll get back to us at her earliest convenience.

I will take this message with me to the museum on Sat. and see what the consensus is there. As far as I know they are the same cemetery. When we talk about our cemetery, most of us just call it the Prophetstown Cemetery even though the proper name is Riverside Cemetery in Prophetstown. There is another family cemetery within the boundaries of Prophetstown called the Stowell Cemetery, but it only has a few graves and hasn't been used for years. There is also another cemetery just outside the city limits which we call the Fisk Cemetery, but I don't think that it was ever called the Prophetstown Cemetery. Will see what the other members think and let you know if it is any different than them being one and the same.

Hi Gail,
Everyone around here calls it the Prophetstown Cemetery, but it's proper name is Riverside Cemetery in Prophetstown.
If there is anything else that we can help you with, just let us know.

Denise,
I have been in touch with Gail and took some photos of the stones of the people that she was looking for and sent them to her via email. It was a large family plot in the Riverside Cemetery in Prophetstown.

Janet,
I know I told you thank you, but two other cousins thank you as well. One cousin, our own wonderful transcriber, Melva Taylor said to tell you quote 'Thank her big time from me .... this is something I really appreciate!'.
Again many thanks!!!

You may want to contact Jim Casson. Jim is the sexton for the Riverside Cemetery. If he does not have the records at the building in the cemetery, he can get his hands on them.

The Henry C. Adams Library in Prophetstown has a CD you can search for anyone you are looking for in the Prophetstown Riverside Cemetery. There is also a lot map to guide you. When I was there last summer the CD they had was not the most current but they intended to contact Jim to get his updated one. Hopefully, they have.

Bettei,
I hope that you have contacted Jim Casson and received answers to your questions by now. Or gone to the library. What we have at the Prophetstown Area Historical Museum are the old maps with the section number, and lots marked on them. Also a book compiled by Jim Casson with an alphabetical listing of everyone buried in the Riverside Cemetery in Prophetstown, the section of the cemetery where they are buried, the lot and space numbers. It is very easy to find people buried in the cemetery by using the book and maps to locate them.

Is there a list of persons buried amongst both Riverside and Prophetstown Cemeteries?
Thank you for anyone checking it out.

Lindy,
If you read the above messages, you will see that the P-town Historical Society has a listing. Their contact information is also in this msg. thread. You will also see that the two names are for the same cemetery.
