Do you have plat maps for 1875 or around that time of Whiteside County at the museum? Are there any other maps that would show where people lived in the late 1800's- realy 1900s?

In William Curran's obit it states he died at his brother Henry's 3 miles east of Tampico. I'd like to zero in on that homestead.

Thanks

Kathy

We have an 1893 & 1912 - maybe some others. I'll check them out and scan to you if I find him.

That would be great but not necessary. It will give me a reason to drive over and meet you some afternoon! Thanks, Denise

I'll check in the Prophtstown Museum. I know we have one from the 1870's and a couple in the very early 1900's that belong to one of our members and one that belongs to the museum. They are very large books.

Thanks so much! I don't get to Whiteside County like I should. It's only a few miles away, just rarely get in the car! Old stick in the mud me!

Let me know if there's anything you need in the Geneseo Library or Museum, I'll be glad to look for you or anyone.

Hi Kathy,
I just noticed that his obit posted on the site does not have his date of death:
OBIT - William Curran
Submitted by Katherine Walters Minder (Kathy Minder)
obit in the Tampico Tornado...
"William Curran of Humbolt county, Iowa, died at the home of his brother Henry Curran three miles east of here when he was visiting, Monday morning, about 3:30. Death was due to dropsy with which he had suffered for the past six months. He and his wife had been here but a week when death occurred. Funeral services were held Wednesday morning at 9:30 o'clock at St. Mary's church, and interment was in St. Mary's cemetery.

Also survivors of Wm. Curran were his wife, Bridget Breen Curran and daughters Marie Bridget, 14, and Grace Loraine, 10, all of Livermore IA ***end***

However, I recall researching this for you a few years ago (still waiting to hear from Joan C.!!!) If memory serves, didn't he die in Jan. of 1916? Or was it Jan. 16, 19__?

Henry was living in Hahnaman Twp in 1920 (owned his farm land). I cannot find him on the 1910. In 1900 there is a Henry Curran/wife: Mary/Dau: Mary living in Fairfield Twp., Bureau Co.

So, if I find him on the plat map, does that mean you won't come see me???? :(
(I found his land, sect. 7, southeast corner.)

You can actually see it on the map we
have on the site in MAPS
AND ATLASES
. It is somewhat obscured by the first “A”
in HAHNAMAN printed.

He is listed in the 1917 PRAIRIE FARMER'S DIRECTORY:
H. Curran, Ch. Nellie, Mary, Tampico R4, Hahnaman Sec7 O40a (1854),

He supposedly died in 1916, but it isn't in the State Achives. Maybe it was because of the date? I never DID figure that one out. Haven't heard from Joan either.

Naw, I'd love to come visit. Probably after the holidays though, it's crazy around here.

After looking at your map and googling another, I think their property must have been at the corner of Fargo Rd and Hickory Hills Rd. I wonder if there is still a house there. Sounds like another thing to do on my road trip!

Thanks Denise

Hi Kathy,
Isn't "holidays" synonmous with "crazy around here"? (smile). Yep, I remember going out to Morrison and trying to find his death cert. And I cannot tell you how many times I have run into Joan! Everytime I see her, she snaps her fingers and points and says, "I'm gonna look for that soon"! Guess I should have her define "soon." Three years does not fit my definition! (giggle) I'll try calling her again, but I'm sure it's "crazy" by her at this time too.

I thought Hahanaman Twp. was north side of Rt 40. I'm a "transplant" here, though, so others would know better. Besides, more reason for you to come out here! I meant to tell you, I have another plat map at the historical that clearly shows Henry's property, but the book is too large, so thought I would just note the map on our site.

You're very welcome!
Happy Holidays - ah.....MERRY CHRISTMAS!
Denise
