We have a "Dathel Harms" listed on our TMC index. I cannot find information on her. I am not even sure if the date listed is her birth or death date. I am assuming it is her birth date and she may still be living.

I found the following obit for a Vera Wood, which mentions a daughter, Dathel Harms, and was wondering if that is the same Dathel on our cemetery index. And, if so, can anyone provide information on her?

Here is the obit and a census record on Vera Wood:
Verna Wood - Rock Island Argus, The - (Jul/18/2005)
Verna Wood
Verna Wood, 100, of Good Samaritan Village, Geneseo, formerly of Kissimmee, Fla., and Tampico, died Saturday, July 16, 2005, at Good Samaritan Village.

Services are 4 p.m. Tuesday at Garland Funeral Home, Tampico; the Rev. Karl Kaiser of Tampico Baptist Church will officiate. Burial is in Tampico Memorial Cemetery.

Visitation is 3 p.m. to services. A memorial has been established in her memory.

She was born Sept. 5, 1904, in Dresden, Tenn., to John R. and Gertie Sutherland Duke. She married Gerald M. Wood May 7, 1932, in Paris, Tenn. He preceded her in death Jan. 30, 1997.

Survivors are a daughter, Dathel Harms, Davenport; a son, Gerald L. Wood, Crown Point, Ind.; nine grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Aileene Farrarini, Fort Myers, Fla.; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and eight brothers and sisters.

Hi Denise,

Per your question about Dathel Harms, (Cemetery entry) try the 2002 Obit, submitted by Lois Wetzell, WAYNE HARMS, and see if you have your question answered.

Sorry Denise,

I just spent hours tracking the material, and I must say,"I'm at a complete loss".

One thing I ran across was in the Gaz. Index. A corrected obit for W. Wayne Harms was published 11 Feb. 2002. I can only guess that it may have corrected his spouse. DATHEL I. ELLIS, vs. DATHEL I. WOOD.

We might have two DATHEL'S. One. Dathel I Ellis, and second, Dathel Wood. The second daughter of Gerald M. Wood who married Verna A. Duke 7 May 1932 in TN.

So then, how do we get a Tam. Cem. entry for a Dathel I. Harms, suggested wife of W. Wayne Harms (loc. N) with a assumed b. date of 26 Jan. 1927?

I hope we can find an answer to all of this.

Hmmmm - A google search yields: USA PEOPLE SEARCH
http://www.usa-people-search.com/Find-Tammy-Harms.aspx
There is a listing for a Tammy Harms Kappes -
KAPPES, TAMMY L
Associated names (aka's):
HARMS, TAMMY LU
TAMMY, L KAPPES 46 EAST MOLINE, IL
(Other addresses) ROCKFORD, IL
Other people associated with that name and address:
KAPPES, MITCHELL LEE (age 45)
HARMS, WESLEY WAYNE (age 81)
HARMS, DATHEL ELLIS (age 84)

Another entry for her listed the following associated names:
HARMS, TAMMY OTTUMWA, IA
EAST MOLINE, IL
HARMS, DONALD WAYNE (age 55)
HARMS, WESLEY WAYNE (age 81)
HARMS, DATHEL ELLIS (age 84)

The above listings coordinate with information we have from obits - W. Wayne Harms did have a daughter-in-law named Tammy, married to a son, Donald. Wayne would have been about 81 if he were still living.

Ah-ha! On the 1930 census, it appears Verna was married to Joe Ellis and they had a daughter, Dathel. Ta-dah. I think the mystery is solved. I love it when that happens!

1930 United States Federal Census about Dathel Ellis
Name: Dathel Ellis
Home in 1930: Paris, Henry, Tennessee
Age: 6
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1924
Relation to Head of House: Daughter
Father's Name: Joe
Mother's Name: Verna
Parents' birthplace:
Household Members: Name Age
Joe Ellis 34, age at first marriage - 16
Verna Ellis 25, age at first marriage - 18 (m. abt.1923)
Alex Ellis 14
Dathel Ellis 6, appx. dob: 1924
Malissa Ellis 58

My deductions: This is a second marriage for Joe. Alex is from prior relationship and/or marriage and is not Verna's son. Verna would have been 19 when she gave birth to Dathel, so I am "assuming" Dathel is the daughter of Joe & Verna Ellis.

Thanks Jack.

Hi Denise,

I couldn't help but dig into this as my wife is known in a branch of the Harms family and I have descent in a line of the early New England Wood family. After I had my frustration about Dathel as being one or two, it finally dawned on me, as it must have you, to search for Verna in the married version of Ellis. I found the Ellis name used as a first name in descending relatives per a Yahoo person search, and also about the same thing at Ancestry, so I went on with the census search. At 7:16 P.M. I printed the Paris City, KT. sheet, and wasn't able to get a clear read on her first name. I noticed a 8 year gap in the children (Alex - Dathel) so I went back 10 years for Joe. 1920 Joe and Alex are living with what appears to be his brother Henry A. (Civil District A) and Joe lists himself as widowed. So it appears that Alex is half brother to Dathel.

Til next time....

Hi Jack,
Sounds like you are having fun tracing this line. I pretty much assumed that Alex was not Verna's kid, unless she had him when she was 11!

This got a little more confusing the more I read. In response to your innitial question; I'm pretty sure the Dathel Harms in the TMC index is the same as the Dathel in the Wood obit. Her parents were Mr. & Mrs. Gerald Wood who retired to Tampico and lived across from what we used to call Railroad Park in the house that Kermit Branson's used to live in. The Davenport address seems right, because she moved back there from Florida after Wayne died. Her oldest son, Ron lives in Colona. You might get more clarification from Terry Gaskill as I seem to remember that Dathel and Doris were friends. Or, check with either Don or Dale Harms.

Dear MiloS,

(Denise, if I'm off in LaLa Land on this, please contribute as you please)

I' attempt to come forward in time:

1. John R. Duke m. Gertie Sutherland

2. John and Gertie have a daughter Verna (aka) Vera b. 5 Sept. 1904.

3. Verna Duke, m. Joe Ellis, and are found in the 1930 Henry Co., TN. census. With this family is a daughter, DATHEL, age 6. b. ? 1924.

4. Appears shortly after the 1930 census, Joe Ellis and wife Verna are separated, for what ever reason.

5. (I assume) Verna nee Duke (Mrs. Joe Ellis) m. Gerald M. Wood, 7 May 1932 in Paris TN. Daughter Dathel is now some 8 years old, and acquires a step father.

6. 8 Oct. 1950, Dathel I. Ellis (daughter of Verna nee Duke (Ellis) Wood) marries Wayne Harms. (per Waynes obit)

7. ???? Cem. Data for Dathel suggests b. 26 Jan. 1927, but was age 6 in 1930 KT. census.

I do not have any other references for this other than the census material and what is offered in the obits as seen here on this site, so please take this above material with caution, as I have suggested a good portion of it.

Guess I should have started with the cemetery first! Dathel's date of birth is Jan. 26, 1924! I re-wrote my previous posts to try to clarify better. I went out to cemetery today (freezing rain just started!) and took a pic of the grave. Thanks for all of the input Milo & Jack! I love it when you folks participate - ;?) I have emailed Terry to help validate that we have the correct Dathel.

4. Appears shortly after the 1930 census, Joe Ellis and wife Verna are separated, for what ever reason.

Just a small correction. They didn't seperate. Verna's first husband (day's father) died in a car accident so, she was widowed. then she remarried to Gerald Wood.

Hi, I ran across this site while looking for some information on the Ellis family. Dathel Harms was my Aunt. My father was her brother Alex Ellis. Alex died in Paris, Tennessee December 13th 1976.
Stephanie is correct Joe Ellis was killed in Bowling Green Kentucky while he was working there. He was a plumber, pipe fitter, sheetmetal worker.

I last saw Dathel and Wayne in 1998 at their home in Florida. I may have a few pictures of Dathel and Verna from their time in Paris if anyone is interested I'll be glad to look for them.
