I think Nellie was born in 1894- but I will have to look for sure- if that is Olive standing next to Sarah and she was born in 1893 that would put the little girls approximately a year or less apart so it makes sense that it would be Nellie- do you agree?

Hi Debra,

Ah, so we have another "mystery" to be solved.....

From her mother's obit (Charity nee WILSEY) written up in the Bureau County Times - June 8, 1894 (when Darlene/Nellie have been a little over 1 mo. old) she is listed as "Darlene":

From the Bureau County Times - June 8, 1894
Mrs. William Shere passed away May 21, 1894, at almost 9:00 am. She was born in Orange County, N.Y. June 10, 1856 and so attained the age of 37 years 11 months and 11 days. She had three brothers and five sisters, all of whom survive her. The family consisted of two sons and two daughters: Clarence and Albert, May and Darlene. Mrs. Shere took sick about October 1st with soreness of the throat which continued to grow worse from day to day until at last she was bed ridden. Her children ministered to her daily, which was a great comfort to her. She showed heroic patience and characteristic concern for the well being of others more than for herself. She gave repeated assurance that she rested on Jesus for future salvation and desired to depart and be at rest. Her funeral services were held at the church in Yorktown, at 2 O'clock, Wednesday afternoon May 26th conducted by Reverend Fahr, between three and four hundred people attending. The pallbearers were: Marion Ladue, Werner Cox, Sherman Comings, William Lane, and William Forward. The long procession went to the Fairfield Cemetery on foot. Thus, we laid to rest on that beautiful day in May one of that beloved pair, whose remembrance on account of their jovial friendship, generous hospitality, honesty, thrift and interested helpfulness to all in need of help, is entwined with grateful reminiscence in the memory of people in the Bureau and Henry Counties. The thanks of the family are rendered to many friends.

I just checked the Social Security Death Index and it has a listing of "Nellie HEINTZELMAN" b April 28, 1894, d December 1966, Last residence: Coquille, OR. SS# issued in Indiana

It also has a listing of "Roy HEINTZELMAN" b March 2, 1891, d July 1970, Last residence: King, WA SS# issued in Washington

Also listed in the SSDI were:

Vernon HEINTZELMAN b August 14, 1915, d June 1970 (place not specified), SSDI issued Illinois

Bernardine A. KUNKLE (I have her as Berndeline Adella), b August 5, 1914, d May 17, 1988, Last residence: Coquille, OR

Viola D. BUCKLEY (I have her as Viola DARLENE), b February 26, 1918, d June 16, 1995, Last residence: Coquilla, OR

So, it is interesting that the SSDI has her lsited as Nellie; however, her daughter's middle name in Darlene.

One would expect the SSDI to have her "real" first name listed correctly, but...

Oh Gosh- it is another mystery! I had not realized that she was only a month old when Charity died. I ma not sure if Sharol Molland her granddaughter posted an obit for her on this site or not.
Even is she did I am not sure if her family would have known her correct name either but I will look for it.

I did not find an obit but Sharol referred to her as Nellie Darlene in her post in the "Shere" mesages.
I think you will p[robably have to find a birth certificate to find out for sure.
My Mom was born Elizabeth Fern but was called Fern all of her life. A name she did not like I might add.

And another mystery crops up....Sharol's posting in the SHERE message thread says that Roy's real name was David LeRoy HEINTZELMAN but "Roy was the name he went by." The SSDI, as noted above, has Roy HEINTZELMAN listed, but no David or LeRoy that matches......so, I guess we cannot trust the SSDI to be fully accurate with the name.

Interesting.....

Deb,

Everything we were ever told about Grandma is that her name was Nellie Darlene. I have emailed my cousin Judy's daughter Paula this morning. She may have found some documents or articles left behind after her grandmother, Viola Buckley, passed away. Paula and her husband bought Vi and Ed's house before Ed passed away, and I know that many of Vi's personal things were still there at that time.

Hopefully, Paula will have something to verify any information on Nellie and Roy Heintzelman.

Also, in regards to the "mystery" girl in the picture, I'm not sure which couple is Will and Zilla. Could you or someone identify which little girl is the focus of interest. Is she the one in the dark dress? Thanks.

Sharol

Les,

I have just received an email from Paula, who would be Nellie's great granddaughter. Paula has confirmed that she has a lot of information from Nellie's Bible and other items and family obituaries she and my aunt had saved.

She is going to be working on downloading what she has to send me.

Her grandfather, Ed Buckley was also working on genealogy at one time, and she thinks he may have a lot of information to share, too.

Thanks,
Sharol

Sharol_ I knew we had always called her Aunt Nellie- why she was listed as Darlene in her mother's obit will probably always be a mystery- maybe when whom ever the information was given to for printing did not hear Nellie Darlene-just Darlene or accidently omitted Nellie when typing- good that we know now!
