I am starting a new message thread for the FISHER families. This surname was introduced on our other MESSAGE BOARD THREAD: "Ancestry Findings of Dr. H. A. Terry" (cont'd from prior message board): kwriter13 23-May-2008 8:20 PM
Hello, I am looking for more information on the Fisher family. I have an Amos Fisher who married Lydia Stoddard and had children Emerald b. 1831, Francis, Arsina b. 1830, Ezra b. 1840 and Cynthia.
The Ezra of this group had children Elmer, Emerald b. 1872, Effie, Eldon, Mary, Roy b. 1878 (Zelph LeRoy?), Jessie. They lived in Kansas. I am looking for more information on this family group. Denise
24-May-2008 8:50 AM Kwriter, May I suggest you start a new message thread with FISHER as the subject line? We are getting too many surnames in this thread and it makes it difficult to follow. Well, it does for me anyway. Old brain cells and all.
I have a FISHER genealogy and I will post it sometime next week, after our Cemetery Walk on Monday.

CHILD 1 - Japheth or Jacob Fisher “Japheth Fisher and Maria Williams A notch at a time Tough? What’s tough? Getting lost in the wilderness but undaunted perserveing (sic)to start the firstvfarm (sic) in an unsettled township. Building a barn alone, carrying the heavy logs up a ladder “a notch at a time and laying them properly in their places”. Walking barefoot to frontier logging bees” where savage thistles are apt to abound,” then laughing when friends push you onto “the fangs of those thistles”. That’s tough. So was Japheth Fisher, the first resident of Benton Township in Eaton County. The Vermont-born descendant of an old New England family arrived in Michigan in 1836 from New York, where he had worked on the docks of New York City and along the Erie Canal~He spent his first Michigan winter timbering in Allegany County, where he helped build a mill. From his $266 earnings, he paid $49.75 for a barrel of flour and half a barrel of pork, using the rest of the money to buy 80 acres of virgin forest near what would become Charlotte. In the summer of 1837, he began the tough task of claiming a farm from the woods and raising corn and potatoes. His first house was an 8 10-foot trough-roofed shanty. The following year, he married another Vermont transplant, Marie Williams, ho lived in neighboring Chester Township. When Maria was ready to give birth to their first child, she returned to her mother’s house because the Fishers had no neighbors to assist them. The next eight children were born in their own home though. Japheth and Maria planted the first orchard and operated the first brick-making business and cider press in the county. They also donated I on their farm for construction of a frame schoolhouse that Japheth built with the help of two neighbors-” From the book “Pioneering Michigan”by Eric Freeman, ISBN 1878005-23-5, PAGES 220-221.
‘The first settler in Benton was Japhat Fisher, who through a mistake, located his land six miles farther north than he intended, having calculated to settle on section 30 in the township of Eaton. He arrived in the of Benton in February 1837, and built an eight-by-ten shanty. To Kseej2008, Yes, that is a bit comical! I remember jjj - I was frantic to find him for Mr. Fisher! I'm so glad you are all making family connections. The original messages for FISHER started way back in our "Dr. Terry" thread. ---------- Denise Family History Coordinator Tampico Area Historical Society

Just an FYI: While re-reading through the thread, I noticed the following information listed for the child of Emerald Asa Fisher, Sr.: Name: Emerald Asa Fisher, Jr. Born: November 01, 1893 in: Tampico, Bureau Co., Illinois M Married: February 27, 1917 in: Died: February 17, 1973 in: West Branch, Cedar Co~, Iowa Spouse: Fern Adaline Hegarty
Tampico is in Whiteside County. This could be confusing to those not from the area. Denise

Hi Denise, KC, Emerald, Just checking in to see what new information may have been added. Several years ago I visited the Lakeside cemetry in Benton CO, MI where Amos Fisher, Mary Ames, Fisher Ames, Namoni Davis, etc are buried. I oftened wondered what happened that three members of the family all died on the same day (based upon dates from the gravestones) and I just found the answer here (smallpox). My brother KC just made a trip to Grafton VT last year where he found some information on the Fisher family. From what I gather the Fisher family is still well know in the area.
If anyone is working on the Emerald Asa Fisher or his wife Carrie Lenora (Dale) Fisher family feel free to contact me at fodstuff@hotmail.com John Johnson Helena MT
