I asked my dad the other day about Peter. He said he was killed by a horse at very young age. Do you think you can find the obit? I have been tried and searched no luck so far.

Hi Lisa, He is not listed in the Gazette online index, nor the SSDI. Do you know WHEN he died? Are you sure "Peter" was his real name or first name? If you can give me a date of death, or even a birth date, I can look further or check the Tornado. And WHERE did he die?
There are several Peter Brandts - Is this your guy?

Lisa, You cannot attach photos to the site. You need to email me with the photo (jpg) and I can upload it.
I'm not familiar with that school. Hopefully, another reader will enlighten us. Denise

Denise,
thanks for reply so quickly! Sorry, I just now realized that Peter was not his first name. His first name is George Peter Brants b. Jan 22 1888 d. June 23 1907. I don't know where he died. All I know is that he was killed by a horse.
P.S. I will sent you the souvier and you can upload for me thanks

It looks like there were a number of Brant, Brants and Brandts living in the area - but no George or Peter showing up in the Tampico Tornado newspaper:
November 20, 1903 Aaron BRANDT, who lives south-west of here intends to build a new house in the spring and is hauling lumber for the same now.
December 2, 1904 SHREDDER CUTS ARM OFF Robert COLLINS has Left Arm almost severed in Shredder Cogs, Monday. Robert COLLINS' left arm was caught in the gears of a corn shredder Monday and it was severed almost completely about half way between the elbow and shoulder. The terrible accident which will make Mr. COLLINS a cripple for life happened about ten miles south west of Tampico at Aaron BRANDT's farm. Mr. COLLINS was shredding corn there with his machine and went to oil the cog wheels which operate the snapping rollers. It is supposed that he slipped as his elbow struck the swiftly revolving cogs and in an instant his arm was drawn into the terrible cogs which mashed the forearm and cut the arm off, bone and all above the elbow the blood spurting in streams. John ESHELMAN who was close at hand and others went to Mr. COLLINS assistance and a ham strap was buckled around the arm to stop the profuse bleeding. The men then wanted to carry Mr. COLLINS to the house but his display of grit was remarkable as he calmly remarked he was able to walk. While in the house waiting for the arrival of Doctors WAHL of Tampico and Dr. BOHNETT of Yorktown who had been summoned by telephone, Mr. COLLINS laughed and joked with the horror striken men and walked unassisted to the operating table where he also assisted in undressing himself. At first he refused to take anaesthetic saying he could stand the operation but the doctors administered it and the arm was amputated a few inches above the place where the machine got in its awful work.
May 3, 1906 YORKTOWN Chas BRANT is assisting F.A. COOLEY in the creamery.
January 18, 1907 To Be Married Soon Invitations are out for the marriage of Bertha E. BRANTS and Jesse L. BLACK, which will occur Wednesday evening, January 23 at 8 o'clock at the home of the bride's parents in Tampico. The prospective bride is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John BRANTS who moved here two years ago from Hooppole. She is a splendid young lady and is well liked by all her numerous friends. The groom lives in the vicinity of Yorktown and is a hustling, energetic young man. Friends extend congratulations over the event.
August 9, 1907 The old Thomas creamery which has been idle for several years has been purchased by John BRANTS who is tearing the building down and dismantling the old machinery.
November 1, 1907 Fred BRANDT purchased a REO automobile in Chicago last week. The machine is similar to Asa GLASSBURN’s and was sold by him. It has been used slightly but is in excellent shape and got at a bargain, $750. Mr. BRANDT ran the machine from the city here. He is now building a garage at his residence.
November 29, 1907 Fred BRANTS has a new chauffer to run his automobile. The gentleman arrived last week Friday and for the present will run the cradle.
December 12, 1918 TAMPICO HAS 71 BOYS IN SERVICE Boys In The Service Capt. R.H. WILSON Lieut. A.S. HORN “ E. TEMPLE “ H.A. TERRY “ V.L. GLASSBURN “ Harry BRANTS
April 10, 1919 Mr. and Mrs. Aaron BRANTS have announced the marriage of their daughter, Alice Margaret, to Roy BROWN. The ceremony was performed by Rev. RENDER on Friday, March 30. They left for Chicago that evening. They will begin housekeeping in the Hurbert MATHIS house in Hooppole which is already furnished,. Mrs. BROWN has lived here entire life near Hooppole and is well and favorable known, and Mr. BROWN whose parental home is at Cissna Park, is cashier of the Hooppole bank.
June 26, 1919 The accident of Tony SCHNELL on the Aaron BRANTS farm southwest of here last week recalled the fact that two other accidents have happened in the same vicinity and some people are wondering if there might be a "hodoo." It will be remembered that Robt. COLLINS lost his arm in a shelter down there, a few years later Phillip GERBER was killed when his car overturned and now Tony SCHNELL was hurt quite badly all of which makes the superstitious shake thier heads.
January 14, 1920 DEATH OF AGED MAN Frank O. GERBER received the sad news on New Year's Day that his aged father had passed away at his home in Hooppole. His wife in coming into the house from doing some small chores found him apparently asleep in his chair - but it was the sleep that knows no awakening here. The deceased had been greatly afflicted with rheumatism and it is believed that it reached his heart, causing sudden death. He had been in is usual health, had even walked to his daughter's new home, soon after they, the Aaron BRANTS family, moved in. The children all live near except the daughter Lena, Mrs. Albert SHERE, of Sommer Cove, Sask., who with her husband came for the burial which took place on Monday afternoon. A large concourse of the neighbors and friends of the family assembled to pay a last tribute of respect to Grandpa GERBER, and all join in sympathy for the bereaved ones.

Les,
That was so interesting! Thank you for posting all that.
I was surprised that you could not find Peter's accident and wondered if his accident occured in somewhere else beside Hooppole? I searched and could not find it anywhere. :(

Ok, I checked my Tornado microfilm and found the article about Peter on the front page of the June 28, 1907 paper. It is a "longer" article and, unfortunately, the paper was darkened and the article is along the fold crease - so I am not sure I will be able to catch all the words in the article, but I will do my best later this evening.

From the Tampico Tornado newpaper:
June 28, 1907 FOUND DEAD IN HIS BUGGY Peter BRANTS Dies Mysteriously In Buggy While Riding South West of Here Peter BRANTS, the nineteen year old son of Cornelius BRANTS who lives nine miles south west of Tampico was found dead in a buggy five miles west of Hooppole last Sunday evening about dusk. When found he was jammed closely down between the wheel and shaft and his foot was firmly under the seat. He was discovered dead in this position by X OBERLE near his farm. How the young man came to get into such a position, whether he fell, fainted or was affected by heart failure will never be known. When found his neck was broken, his shoulder and side badly xxx and the side of his face almost xxxxxed to a pulp where the spokes of the wheel hit his head as they went xxxxx. The paint was worn off the spokes all the way to the hub although the xxxxx walked from the last xxxx alive to when the when he was found dead. The young man had been at the Catholic fair north west of Hooppole where he had pitched ball and started home with some boys toward evening. Meeting some other boys going to the evening session, he decided to turn around and go back also passing these boys. He left his companion and got into his own buggy. At KENNEY’s corner he passed some young men acquaintances to whom he exchanged greetings, further on he met some ladies in a rig and they noticed in the dusk that the rig apparently had no driver. They stopped at a farm house and notified by phone OBERLE the next house where there was any one home, to go to the road and catch a loose horse. OBERLE did as directed and was horrified to find Peter BRANTS in it dead. From the place where BRANTS spoke to the boys at the KENNEY’s corner to OBERLE’s where he was found is scarcely more than a quarter mile with one xxxx xxxx between. Right in front of the xxx xxx the cigar he was smoking xxx xxxx xxx. The xxx xxxx xxx in his pockets. The tracks of the buggy showed that he had started to turn into the place but then veered away. Whether he was standing up in the buggy for some purpose and fell forward, fainted or what will, never be known. Some think he over heated himself playing ball and then made himself sick eating ice cream, etc. When the body was found it was taken to OBERLE’s corn crib and a doctor called but it was far to [sic] late. The coroners [sic] inquest was held Monday. The funeral was Tuesday afternoon at the house and then at the Evangelical church at Hooppole. Interment was also at Hooppole. He was nineteen years of age and a son of Cornelius BRANTS. One brother Charles and two sisters, Mrs. Phillip GERBER and Mrs. Howard MATHIS survive who surely have the sympathy of everybody in the tragic death of the young man. He was also a relative of Fred and John BRANTS of this place, Cornelius BRANT [sic] is a brother of John and Fred. Later developments indicate he died of heart trouble. Two other rigs passed him and the occupants of both state that his head was bent down on his breast and although they were acquainted with him he never looked up. It is presumed he was dead then. The horse probably stopped and this caused the body to pitch forward. Doctor BOHNETT made an examination of the young man a year previous to his death and records show BRANTS was affected with heart trouble. The coroner’s inquest brought out no other facts than given in this article and the verdict was death from an unknown cause. The funeral was one of the largest ever held in Hooppole, hardly half of the people being able to get into the church. The casket was buried beneath a mountain of floral tributes.

Lisa,
It is always great to help someone find their "lost relatives!" As you probably know, I have been researching the Tampico area (mostly thru the pages of the Tampico Tornado) and have linked many of its citizens to my family line (DOW and HOGEBOOM) including the BRANTS. So, it was great to find this obit, which I included for Peter in my database.

Lisa,
By the way, I am not sure if you saw that a "Phillip GURBER" was listed living with the BRANTS in the census data above, and you may already know, however Phillip GERBER married Olive BRANTS (Peter's sister) in 1899. They had at least 1 child, Mayme, who married Leslie George DRAYTON. Leslie was the son of Thomas A. & Emma nee JOHNSON DRAYTON. The DRAYTONs lived in the Tampico area and married into the NEEDHAMs (another Tampico area family) thru Leslie's aunt Sarah Ellen "Nellie".

Les,
Thank you for your recent post. Yes I do have that info.
Ummm... two more questions
Do you see any document of where Peter Brants was buried?
Can you find the obit of Jeane T. Brants b. 1925 d. 1956? She was the daughter of Charles and Emma Brants.
Thanks Lisa

Hi Lisa,
Sorry, there was no other information regarding where Peter is buried; however, in stating that it "was the largest funeral ever held in Hooppole..." I would guess that he was buried there.
Lastly, the microfilm of the Tampico Tornado that I purchased was for the years 1886 thru 1920, thus, I don't have any information beyond that point.
It is possible that Melva Taylor may catch this thread and be able to locate the obit. As you might be able to see from her many postings, she is quite prolific when it comes to transcribing Whiteside county obits.
