February 22, 1896 Mrs. E.L. WROTEN took the morning train Wednesday for Ladd, where she will visit with her parents for a few days.
February 22, 1896 L.J. DOW, who for the past year was engineer of the electric light plant at Rock Falls, has charge of an electric light plant at Ladd, Ill.
February 22, 1896 B.D. GREENMAN has taken considerable interest in telephones of late and now has three different lines in his store to operate. He can attach them all together and hear from any line. He is trying new experiments and son expects to have the system so perfected that he can play upon a fiddle in his store and have all in town who own 'phones her his music.
February 22, 1896 The Mystic Workers organized in Tampico Feb., 14th, 1896. The following officers were elected, Master, E.W. WAHL; Vice Master, E.C. DAVIS; Sec. C.F. SIPPEL; Banker, M.R. THACKABERRY; Med. exams, Dr. WAHL and Dr. ROUNDS; Atty. J.D. BRECKENRIDGE; Conductor, W.L. GLEASON; Sent. John P. GREEN; Picket, Lee DOW; Manager for three years, Thos. McMILLEN, for two years, Fred BLEITZ, for one year Dr. ROUNDS. Charter left open indefinitely. The adjourned to meet Friday evening, Feb. 21st.
February 22, 1902 President ROOSEVELT departed from Groton, Mass., for Washington, confident that his son will make a speedily recover from an attack of pneumonia.
February 22, 1902 There will be several changes in the neighborhood about March 1st. John GREENMAN will move upon the Mrs. Elsie McKENZIE farm, vacated by Pleas. DOW; Clarence SHERE will live on the HOPKINS place, vacated by George GREENMAN, who moves to the NOON farm.
February 22, 1902 NEWS FROM YORKTOWN Clarence WINCHELL spent Sunday in Annawan. A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. A.G. SYLER last Wednesday. Mack PIERCE is master of ceremonies at the store during Mr. FOY's absence.
February 22, 1902 The interior of the electric light plant is being remodeled and repaired. Several partitions have been torn out and moved and new ones built. When all is complete the engine and dynamo will be enclosed in a room separate from the boiler room and machine shop. The engine will not be moved. The work is being don e by Grant HUGHES under the direction of DeWitt WEST, the owner.
February 22, 1902 PLAY WILL BE GIVEN BY HOME TALENT The Gypsie's Secret, a drama of four acts will be given by Tampico home talent in BURDEN's opera house on Saturday night, March 1. The proceeds will go the band and certainly the entertainment deserves to be well patronized. The following is the cast of characters: Imogene Courtleigh, Jennie KNOX Ginger-a gipsy [sic] waif, Grace SULLIVAN Nancy Tyson, Mae ALLEN Prudence Freehart, Nellie COLLINS Horace Verner, Will COLLINS Dink Potts, Bennie BRAINERD Ira Courtleigh, Roy McKENZIE Buck Tyson, James BRECKENRIDGE
February 22, 1902 L.A. WHEELOCK says the Farmer's Telephone line north of here will be completed as soon as a line man can be secured to do the work.
February 22, 1902 Ralph McKENZIE left for Smith Center, Kansas, Tuesday night where he will visit for some time.
February 22, 1902 Word has been received that Wilbur FOY an old resident of Yorktown but who has been living in Missouri for the past few years, is dead.
February 22, 1902 Robert WROTEN had the misfortune to cut a large gash in his thumb last week and as a consequence the thumb is very sore.
February 22, 1902 Samuel DUGAN, loaded his household effects and stock on the cars here Monday and Tuesday and left Tuesday for his new home in north western IOWA.
February 22, 1907 B.F. DOW will have a public sale, Monday, March 4. See the bills.
February 22, 1917 Tampico barbers will raise the price of hair cutting after March 1 from 25c to 35c. Barbers in all the surrounding cities have raised the prices and Tampico will follow. Tampico barbers advise everybody to get their hair cut just before the raise and then right after.

February 23, 1889 H. M. McKENZIE of Elwood, Iowa, called on our office Friday morning and left $1.50 with me for the Tornado for another year.
February 23, 1889 KILL THAT ANIMAL - A grand hunt will take place Tuesday February 26th, 1889. The intention of this hunt is to capture or kill the wild animal that has created so much excitement in this locality this winter. There will be four townships surrounded, viz, Manlius, Greenville, Fairfield, and Gold. A meeting was held at New Bedford and the following named officers were appointed to take charge of and command the force: Co.- A D.A. DILLER and sons B Ben MUNSON, M. BOWEN, Geo BROWNE C Pastor McDONELL, W. BENNER, Frank EALIE D Robt. HILLER, Morg. RENNER, I.S. HAYES E Henry KERLY, Jim WOODARD, J. BURTON F Frank GREENWOOD, Oliver HEWLETT, B. [Byron] HOGEBOOM G John THOMAS, N.S. LATHROP, Amel JOHNSTON H Samuel BROWN, W. ENGELTON, D. BREAL I Edward NEWELL, Henry BILLS, C. McCULLEY J Joseph KOLP, George DABLER, W. WHITE Every body to be in line by 10 o'clock sharp, and ready to march. The place decided upon for the center or closing in place, is known as Lost Grove, about half a mile north of Pat HAGAN's and J.Y. SPANGLER's places. Another meeting will be held at New Bedford Thursday evening, Feb. 21st, 1889, to make other arrangements if needed. Every body invited to join in this hunt, as a good time is anticipated. A large number of wolves will undoubtedly be killed and probably the "What-is-it."
February 23, 1889 Mr. and Mrs. W.J. LOVE [Margaret and William?] were guests of Mr. and Mrs. J.F. LEONARD over Tuesday night.
February 23, 1889 We are pained to report the severe illness of Hi McKENZIE, who is very low.
February 23, 1889 A warmer, better protected house can't be found in town than H.H. [Tip] DOW.
February 23, 1889 Fourteen above zero with winds blowing from the south Thursday morning at six.
February 23, 1889 At six o'clock Tuesday morning the thermometers around here registered three or four degrees below zero.
February 23, 1895 Mrs. D. P. ALDRICH gave a reception at her residence on Main street, Tuesday in honor of the anniversary of her brother's, Warren HIXON's, [sic] birthday. A large number of invitations were sent out to parties of this place and Yorktown, and all who were invited were old friends of Mr. HIXSON, when he was a resident of this place. Mrs. ALDRICH had her house nicely fitted up for the occasion and had secured ALLEN's orchestra to enliven the scenes with their fine music. About ten o'clock the attention of the guests were called to the east room, by the announcement that a letter from J.H. VARIAN would be read. A repaired to the room or stood in the doorways to listen to the communication. Mr. GIFFORD was called upon to read the letter. As the reader finished the letter, he turned toward Mr. HIXON and, in behalf of those present, presented him with a gold watch chain and charm. Mr. HIXSON was wholly unprepared for such a change in the program and it came when least expected: but with an effort he regained his self-possession and in a neat and feeling address kindly thanked the donors for their handsome gift. After this supper was announced a most elaborate lap supper was served. The remainder of the evening was spent in social visiting and the hour of twelve was drawing near before the guests bade the hostess and her brother good night and wended their way home.

February 24, 1894 John HOGEBOOM and wife, of Denrock were in town Monday.
February 24, 1916 HOWLING WOLVES DISTRUB FARMERS Farmers east of Tampico in Hanaman township are complaining that a pack of wolves has kept them awake several nights and reminded the people of the old times when the yelp of a wolf was common after sundown. The farmers are talking of forming a hunting party and chase the brutes to their lairs.

February 25, 1899 Mrs. Frank SEELEY took the evening passenger for Raton, New Mexico, where she and her husband will make their home in the future.
February 25, 1899 Mrs. Clara PAICE and daughter, Miss Edith, took the morning train Thursday for Chicago, where they intend to make their home.
February 25, 1899 Dr. J.P. LEONARD, formerly of Tampico, is the first tenant to take possession of the apartments in the new K.H. & W. building. He had his office furniture moved Wednesday morning. - Gazette.
February 25, 1899 The undersigned having rented his farm, will sell at public auction at his residence 1/2 mile south and 1/2 mile east of Yorktown Corners, on Friday, Mar. 3rd, commencing at 1 p.m., his live stock and farm tools, etc. Virgil A. McKENZIE.
February 25, 1899 The Tampico High School organized a " Friday Afternoon Club" Feb. 14, 1899. The following officers were elected: President, Glenn CRADDOCK; Vice-Pres., Mabel THOMAS; Sec'y, Daisy FERRIS. By order of the President the following committees on program was appointed: Jennie HOGEBOOM, Mable THOMAS and LeRoy DARNELL. The first program was given Wednesday in honor of Washington's birthday. Considerable interest was taken in the debate on Resolved: "That Washington was a greater statesman that Jefferson." The affirmative won.

February 26, 1887 G.K. ALLEN shipped his household goods from this place to Nebraska this week, where he will engage in farming the coming season.
February 26, 1887 NOTICE To whom it may concern. - I have this day given my son Floyd DOW, (a minor) his time, and he is authorized to transact business for himself as if of lawful age, I will not collect any of his wages or pay any debts of his contracting after this date. H.H. DOW. Tampico, Ill., Feb., 27th, 1887.

February 26, 1920 PITNEY STORE SOLD Arthur ROGERS has purchased the PITNEY hotel, old livery stable and all the lots of the hotel property at the reported consideration of about $3,000. Mr. ROGERS states that the hotel will be operated as usual by Mr. and Mrs. Morrell FOY until he can secure some other parties or sell the property. Mr. and Mrs. FOY had planned for some time to retire about March 1. Mr. ROGERS says the old livery barn will probably be torn down. The hotel corner, and the hotel business is a very good proposition and Mr. ROGERS has been fortunate in securing it.

February 27 1897 John HOGEBOOM, landlord of the Denrock hotel, was doing business in Tampico Wednesday.
February 27 1897 Robert WROTEN invaded the Tornado office last Wednesday and full of smiles and good fellowship, he produced a bundle of cigars and told the editor to smoke to the success of his little daughter, who came to live at his home last Saturday. Here's to the young lady, and may she live to be a source of happiness and pride to her father and mother.
February 27 1897 D.W. FOUST will go to Davenport, Iowa, where he has secured the position of motorman on the electric street car line.
February 27 1897 Hubert DENISON is to have the SHANK's residence on the corner of Joy and Market streets. He is to take possession as soon as Evits moves upon his farm north-west of town.
February 27 1897 FROM YORKTOWN Foster WINCHELL and Jessie SHERE were baptized last Sunday night in the Christian church. Claude LOVE is moving on the Conrad SEYLER farm in Henry county.

February 28, 1891 Will STILSON is to move into Geo. H. LUTYENS house.
February 28, 1891 Hurbert DENISON has moved near Morrison. He will work for his uncle Mr. LANGDON.
February 28, 1891 Henry PITNEY, who has been clerking in BALDWIN's store at Prophetstown, for the past two years, has resigned his clerkship there and accepted a position in W. H. HARRISON's store of this place and will be installed in his new place March 1st. Henry, prior to going to Prophetstown, worked for Mr. HARRISON and and the acquaintance of a large number of people of this vicinity, all of whom will welcome him back to his old station.
February 28, 1891 E. STEWART has sold his residence property, in the southwestern part of town, to A.T. GLASSBURN. Mr. STEWART will work Henry DENISON's farm this coming season and Henry will move to town and work at carpenter work.
February 28, 1891 To whom it may concern, I hereby give notice that I have this day given my son, John J. GREENMAN, (a minor) for $1 to me in hand paid, his time as if of lawful age. February 28, 1891 MELVIN and HOGEBOOM of New Bedford, are invoicing their stock of general merchandise preparatory to stepping down and out and letting their successors, the HUNT brothers, taked [sic] the reigns and direct the business. Messrs. MELVIN and HOGEBOOM while doing business in that place have been more than moderately successful and have made a host of friends. Mr. HOGEBOOM, we understand, will engage in the hardware and implement business with his brother, B. E. HOGEBOOM of that place. We wish him unbounded success with his new enterprise.
February 28, 1903 YORKTOWN Emil OTT intends to build a fine new house this spring. A.A. SHERE was in Tampico Wednesday. Bessie SHERE, of Erie, visited her parents this week. Mrs. A.O. HUNTER and Mrs. Clarence SHERE spent Tuesday in Tampico. Nathan and Foster WINCHELL moved onto M.R. THACKABERRY's farm this week.
February 28, 1903 Mr. and Mrs. Frank LANDWAIR and Mr. and Mrs. HALL, of Erie, were the guests of Mr. and Mrs. J.F. LANDWAIR this week.
February 28, 1903 Jos. GREENWOOD, who accidentally received a gunshot wound in his elbow recently at a shooting match, had to have a portion of the bone removed Monday.
February 28, 1903 Mr. and Mrs. Ernest McKENZIE wish to express their gratitude and sincere thanks to all of their friends and neighbors who showed such kindness and sympathy in so many ways during the illness and death of their baby.

Thanks Les, for posting the March 1915 article about Admiral Jos. "Mason" Reeves! I really want to promote him more at the historical society and on the site. He had some amazing accomplishments in his life, not to mention that the first football helmet was designed for him!

Thanks for pointing out my error of publishing a March 25 article in February. I know that was not your intent, but it is important that these articles get posted in the correct "..Week in Tampico History..." As such, I have removed it and insterted articles from the 25th of February. The March 15th "REEEVES" article will be republished in a few weeks (when we get to the week that contains 3/25).
