I am trying to find out when the train tracks, that went down the middle of south main street, were taken up. I was sure that I remembered seeing them when I was little but my friends and relatives seem to think I was dreaming. Anybody else remember them?

Hi Connie, Here is a blurb from the Centennial Year Book which was extracted from a Moline news article in 1968 - it could help pinpoint the time frame. I know I have read something about them taking up the tracks - probably in the Tornado. "Little evidence of the HY&T exists today (1968). In places, the old roadbed shows briefly at the ragged edge of fields, behind buildings in old shipping points, and along the banks of a broad drainage ditch in Fairfield Township in Bureau County, which the crazy right-of-way followed until a friendly farmer let it cross the land.
A few, worn ends of cross ties show behind Mathis' elevator in Hooppole. A short length of its old standard-guage track can be found in the Tampico yards, where the old depot is now an ancient, crumbling shed." (The train stopped running in 1954)
I'll ask around for you.... ---------- Denise Family History Coordinator Tampico Area Historical Society

Thanks Denise. If the train stopped running in 1954, it certainly had to have tracks to run on. Since I am much older than 1954, I am going to assume that I was right about the tracks. I did read an artical on this website about tearing them up but it didn't have a date.
