Terry Buckaloo, Director & Museum Curator of the Sterling/Rock Falls Historical Society was the guest speaker for the Tampico Area Historical Society on Tuesday night. Terry gave an informative presentation, complete with a story board, about their current Manahan House project. You can visit their website: S/RF Historical Society
The S/RF Historical society purchased the house at 603 East Third Street, Sterling, IL, with a goal to rehab it to it's 1856 architectual status, and open its doors to the children as an educational tool.
Abraham Lincoln stayed overnight at this home in that year while visiting Sterling to campaign for the newly formed Republican Party's first Presidential candidate, John C. Fremont.
The S/RF Historical Society has incorporated the help of many professionals during the project from architect, historians as well as those that "specialize" in finding and digging up "privies," They were able to find the location of the original privy for the Manahan home. Privies (outhouses) can be a treasure trove of historical artifacts. You can learn of these treasures when you tour the home.
Terry also showed us their latest publication, an 1872 plat book which has been indexed. It was the product of a very long, diligent project which can only be fully appreciated by those of us that have labored over these plat maps, trying to find specific names. They have also included land marks, churches & schools. It's amazing to me that they sell it for only $20, but only through Sept. 30. The price will increase slightly after that. Contact information: Sterling-Rock Falls Historical Society, 1005 E. Third Street P.O. Box 65, Sterling, IL 61081 - Telephone: (815) 622-6215 Hours: Tues-Thur-Sat 10 a.m.-12 noon & 1-4 p.m.; Sun 1-5 p.m.
