Hi Denise. I am also a member of raogk and have asked for help for this brick wall that I have. I am looking for my ggggrandfather who was reported to have lived in the Sterling, Whiteside County area. His name is Patrick Kelly. I figure he probably was born around 1799 based on the dates of his son’s birth and his father’s year of birth. I don’t have certain dates for his arrival or for his land, home, or death. I only know that he had a son, Dennis Kelly, born around 1825 and died Oct. 18, 1879 in Chicago. His father was also named Dennis and he was born about 1779 based on an 1860 census in Tennessee.

The family story is that young Dennis came over first to make a fortune and then bring the rest of the family once he could afford for their voyage. He ended up in New Orleans and then up to Memphis. He married Johanna Coffey in Memphis in January of 1861. The story is that around that time is when the rest of the family came and they moved to the Sterling area while Dennis and Johanna moved to Chicago. That’s where the story ends.

I have no idea what happened to old Dennis or his son Patrick. I found a naturalization record for a Patrick Kelly in Morrison in 1862. The witnesses, Theron Hawes and S.B. King can be found as pretty successful farmers in the area. That fits the story because all of these Kellys from County Tipperary were farmers. It would make sense that Patrick would work for a farmer. I can’t prove his age either.

The other piece of family info is that Patrick’s wife was named Bridget. I can find a Bridget and a Patrick living with a William Kelly in 1870 in Troy, Will County, Illinois and I can find a William P Kelly living in Hopkins, Whiteside County in 1865. He has two elderly male and female living with him that sound like the same Bridget and Patrick.

I am wondering if you have access to any death records or land records from Whiteside County that might be helpful. Thanks if you can assist.

Joan Kelly Pappinhave emailed before and forgot. Here it is again.

Hi Joan,
I will check our plat books and other resources at the historical society this week. There were a lot of Kellys in this area. But, I always love a good challenge!

Hi Joan,
I tried checking our plat books, but they only go back to 1872. I did find a D. Kelley in Whiteside Co. There are too many Kelly's listed on the IL Death Index. Are you familiar with the IL State Archives (ISA) Online?

I'll keep checking. If I can find a definitive address, I can possible track them in land records.
