DEATH COMES TO U.P. GOEKEN, WELL KNOWN CITIZEN - Passes Away At 3 a.m. Monday - Funeral Services to Be on New Year's

U. P. Goeken, one of the city's best known former businessman, this vicinity, passed away Monday morning at 3 o'clock at his home, 417 East Seventh street, after an illness that confined him to his bed since last October.

Two years ago Mr. Goeken became seriously ill with pernicious anemia, but he recovered his health to some extent and was able to be up and about, attending services regularly at St. Paul's Lutheran church until last September, when his health began to fail noticeably and during October he was obliged to take his bed, creeping paralysis making him helpless.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, New Year's day, at 2 o'clock in the afternoon at the family home and at 2:30 in St. Paul's Lutheran church. The pastor Rev. F. M Kuethe will speak in English and Re. M. Reu, D. D. of Wartburg academy, Dubuque, former pastor of St. Paul's will speak in German. Interment will be in Riverside Cemetery. Friends are requested to omit flowers.

Ulrich P. Goeken was born March 19, 1851, in Minsen, Oldenburg, Germany, and was 78 years, nine months and 11 days of age at the time of his death. He came to America with his parents, Frederick P. and Cathering Goeken, in 1870, and the family home was established on a farm near Minonk, Ill.

On Dec. 13, 1876, Mr. Goeken was united in marriage to Miss Johanna Janssen, in the Lutheran church at Minonk. They came to Rock Falls in the following January and lived on a farm west of Rock Falls for 12 years. Forty-one years ago they moved to Sterling, where the family home has been since that time.

In 1890 Mr. Goeken started in the grocery business with L.[could be the letter I] L. Janssen, the firm of Janssen and Goeken being a well-known business concern of this city for 31 years. They sold the business to Landis Brothers nearly 10 years ago.

Mr. Goeken is survived by his widow, the three children born to them all having preceded their father in death. Fred in 1898, Lena in 1904, and Catherine, Mrs. Hugo Weyrauch, in 1912. Mr. Goeken's only brother, John Goeken, passed away in this city a number of years ago.

HELP BUILD TWO CHURCHES
Friends without number will mourn the passing of this quiet gentleman, whose long life was marked with industry and uprightness. As a citizen of the Rock Falls parish, it was his privilege to be one of the charter members of the Lutheran church in that city in 1878 and when St. Paul's Lutheran Church was organized in Sterling in 1907, it was again his privilege to be a charter member of the church on this side of the river. For 20 years he served faithfully as treasurer of the church and as a deacon on the church board, his advice and zealous assistance being of inestimable value to the work of the church.

The long illness and weakening of his bodily strength that preceded his final calling home did not break his fine spirit or lesson his Christian faith. He continued in his church activities until physically unable to continue them. and his name will be revered as one of the founders and pillars of the church through the years to come.
