The Tampico Area Historical Society encompasses parts of Whiteside County and Bureau County in Illinois. Focus is on Tampico, Hume Twp., Hahnaman/Deer Grove, & Prophetstown in Whiteside County & Yorktown & Thomas in Bureau County.

Anne E 1 post Aug 03, 2004 9:38 AM	Hi -- this is a historical question rather than a genealogical question. I'm searching for the location of the former Tampico municipal landfill, which the IL Environmental Protection Agency describes as being in the area bounded by Matznick, Jersey, Coleta, and Hurd Rds., southwest of Tampico (sec 28, Tampico Township). IEPA records describe the site as being continually satisfactorily operated, which must be the case as in driving around this area I could see no sign of where it once was. I'm trying to narrow down the location of this site a little better than just to the nearest square mile. Are there any recollections, or any information, out there? Thanks, Anne E.

Anne E 2 posts Aug 04, 2004 11:10 AM	Thanks Denise! I did discover one more bit of possibly relevant info, if this helps. In the 1954 & 1965 Whiteside County Land Atlas & Plat Books, there is a parcel shown almost in the exact middle of Section 28 labelled "City of Tampico", and then in 1970, 1973, and 1976 plat books as "C of T". I'm wondering if this could be the location, although on aerial photos it doesn't look much like a landfill. Anne E.
Anonymous Guest Aug 09, 2004 9:28 AM	Look for the concrete television tower two miles west of town. The "blow-out", as it was called, sits just below it on a sandhill...lots of good times there looking for stuff
Administrator Denise 87 posts Aug 10, 2004 1:14 AM	(from Anne Martin, Presdident of TAHS) Denise, One of the "locals" was in the Historical Society today and offered the following: Bob Cassens (sp?) was in today. I asked him the landfill questions We inteurpreted landfill to mean "City Dump" One was on the NW side of town. East of where the Catholic Cemetery is. There was a small farm there. It was in use for many years, and was closed around the late 40s or early 50s. There was also one at the sand blow out. He said there was probably some intersting stuff buried there. Milo Smith Guest Dec 08, 2004 8:27 AM	I grew up in Tampico(1947 or 48 thru 1964)and the only dump I recall was 1 mi. south and 2 mi. west of town. I seem to remember the road going west went right up into it; you end- ed up on a sand hill and just through your debris off the side into any of several gullies.
Anonymous Guest Dec 21, 2004 10:35 AM	The dump-as it was called was sold to the village by my grandfather, Levi Lutyens. Take Jersey road west one and 1/2 mile from route 172. Connie Doty owns the land and lives there as well. It was originally a campgrounds for traveling gypsys and indians according to grandpa who was born on that farm in 1869. It also had great morrell (sp?) mushrooms when I was a little girl. Rita Peltier
