Hi all - I have found my great grandfather, George Greenwood, listed in the 1880 census as being in Yorktown, Henry County, Illinois. Is this the correct town as you are now Bureau or Whitside county? This is the only Yorktown I could find in all of Illinois. He was married to Margaret and they had 3 sons, George Jr., Frank and Freddie - he is listed as a farmer and is #33 on page 5, district 3(?) ED 124(?). So far, I have been unable to find him in any ensuing census. Any help would be greatly appreciated as I am really having trouble tracking dear George. Thank you...Carol

Carol,
I did some searching both on this site and on Ancestry.com.
First, you have the correct Yorktown. It's one of those "funny border towns", technically in Henry County, part of a township in Bureau county - I don't really understand it myself. If you do a site search (bottom of Home page) you will find references to a Greenwood family, including a bio on Alfred Greenwood, but don't know if there is any connection to your Greenwood line.

There is someone doing research on your family name and it seems to fit with the info you have given and what I found on Ancestry. The email listed for her is from 2003, so I don't know if it is still valid.

I do not think that all of the info I retrieved is pertinent to your family line, but thought I would leave the detective work to you! LOL

Here's what I found on Ancestry, and the IL Archives:

Denise, I can't thank you enough for all your wonderful "clues"! Many of them seem to fit and they certainly will give me a lot more to investigate. I'm pretty new at this and don't always know where to look for information. Again, thank you so much!! Carol

TYPICALLY IN THE 19TH CENTURY, ADDRESSES WERE GIVEN BY TOWNSHIP OF RESIDENCE. YORKTOWN THE TOWN IS IN FAIRFIELD TOWNSHIP OF BUREAU COUNTY, WHEREAS YORKTOWN THE TOWNSHIP IS IN HENRY COUNTY. One could live in the town of YORKTOWN and be from FAIRFIELD, or one could live in HOOPPOLE and be from YORKTOWN. Yorktown township starts just a mile west of YORKTOWN the town, so the locality is fundamentally the same and the Greenwood name is popular here... If this is confusing, I could tell you about the people who come to Yorktown looking for the shopping center..
