I am a direct descendent of Anthony Hamblock. His son, Joseph, was my grandfather. I remember my mother telling me that we are related somehow to the Wahl family, but haven't made any connections yet. I have some Hamblock info, mostly on Anthony's side, but a little on Peter's side. My email address is jimr67@yahoo.com.

Marcia and Jim, I am a decendent of Jacob Hein and his first wife Christina Crum. Their daughter Mathilda Hein, who married Henry Weber, was my great, great grandmother.
I know that Jacob Hein was born about 1821 in Meldorf, (near Hamburg) Germany. With two brothers, he arrived in New York City in 1848. Jacob and Christina married on Jan 4, 1851 in Newark, Kendall County, Illinois. She was born in 1832 in Sechshelden, Germany. She died at age 27 years, 7 months and 27 days on May 1, 1860. Jacob married Maria Anna Hamblock on December 15, 1860. Their daughter Christina married John Schauff and had 11 children. Their daughter Nettie married Fred Allen and had one daughter. Their daughter Lizzie married William Wahl and had six children. (So Jim, that's how we're related to the Wahls of the famous Wahl Clipper Company in Sterling, Illinois.)
As far as Maria Anna's siblings are concerned, I only know that William married an Austrian born woman named Elizabeth and they resided in Hahnaman and had three children, Elizabeth, Joseph and Mathias.
Now, if you can answer my question, I know that Jacob was buried by an English Lutheran minister in Riverside. Were his wives and children Catholic? Because I'm pretty sure that great great Grandma Weber was. Did she convert when she married Henry or was she already raised Catholic? Just curious. I'd be happy to hear from you about anything that you know. My email address is sisterpatcasey@yahoo.com

Marcia,
sorry, I noticed one mistake that I made in my first message to you. Christina was not the oldest daughter of Mary Ann Hamblock, she was the youngest daughter of Christina Crum. Jacob and Mary Ann only had two daughters, not three. So the Schuaff family is only half related to the Hamblocks. They belong to the first set of Hein/Crum children. Sorry about that mix up.

Hello Pat,
Thanks for responding. According to my family records, both Jacob & Christina were Lutheran and when Christina died, she was buried in Riverside Cemetery according to the Lutheran rite. Their children would have all been raised as Lutherans as long as Christina lived so we might assume that any who practiced the Catholic faith were converts, probably due to marriage to a Catholic, UNLESS they were influenced by their step-mother. Marie Anna Hamblock was Catholic by birth and their two children were certainly raised in the Catholic faith and practiced faithfully their entire lives. (As mentioned above, their second daughter, Elizabeth (Lizzie) was my husband's grandmother.) Jacob retained his Lutheran faith his entire life and as you mentioned, was buried in Riverside next to Christina by a Lutheran minister. I do know that Mathilda praticed the Catholic faith as she is buried in Sacred Heart Cemetery in Sterling next to Marie Anna, her step-mother. The descendants of Jacob and Christina's daughter Christina, who married John Schauff were practicing Catholics in the 1930's, 40's and 50's, but I don't know when the change in religion appeared in that branch of the family. Again, it is possible that Marie Anna influenced the religios upbringing of Jacob and Christina's children since they were so young when their natural mother died.I have been in touch with one of the Schauff descendants and she and her sister are trying to dig up some Schauff information for me, so maybe there will be some clarification when I receive data from them. Any more questions, please feel free to contact me. As far as the Hamblocks go, there were two other brothers, Peter and Anthony, who I am trying to follow. There are some descendants of Anthony still in the Tampico area I'm told.
We will be making a trip to Sterling next September for a class reunion so I intend to make a few calls and stops while I'm in the area. My e-mail address is em16frwy@att.net. Thanks again for responding.

I am trying to sort out the two Joseph HAMBLOCKs in the Tampico area in the early to mid 1900s:

Joseph A. HAMBLOCK who married Odelia BUECHEL is the son of Anthony and Ellen HAMBLOCK; but who is the Joseph J. HAMBLOCK that married Nellie CURRIN?

Also, here is the obit for Anthony that I transcribed from the Tampico Tornado:

January 16, 1919
DEATH OF ANTHONY HAMBLOCK
Anthony HAMBLOCK one of the oldest citizens of this community and for more than a half century a resident of Tampico township, died at the old home farm a mile east of Tampico last week Friday afternoon about 4:45. He had been gradually declining in health for some time due to his advancing years but was only bedfast the three weeks preceding his death which was caused by the breaking down of his system on account of his age.
Funeral services were held Monday morning at 10 o'clock at St. Mary's church conducted by Rev. Father L.X. DuFOUR and interment was in St. Mary's cemetery.
Anthony HAMBLOCK was born July 16, 1828 in Germany and came to this country when about 35 years of age. He was married in Sterling to Ellen HOLLAHAN and shortly after their marriage they moved to the farm east of Tampico which has been their home since. Five children were born to this union, four of which died in infancy. One son, Joseph the only remaining relative and child lives on the home place with his family. The deceased was known as a hard working, industrious farmer who by the fruits of his toil earned a fine farm. He was a faithful member of St. Mary's church and took an interest in its welfare.

Thanks,
Les

Les and I have been exchanging emails regarding the multiple Joseph Hamblocks, and I though I would post my response to hime here to help others researching that family.

As I clear up the mystery of the 2 Joseph Hamblocks, I need to tell you there were a total of 3. Two were living in the early 1900's, and the third is a son of one of them. Seems the fanily liked the name Joseph.

Much of what I have was given to me by my uncle, Charles Hamblock. I also received a lot of info from a cousin, David Stolzoff of Sterling.

In the 1830's four Hamblock children moved to the Sterling/Tampico area from Prussia. Peter was the older brother. He married Josephinr Wierz, and they had 10 children. Most of that family now live in Montana.

William and Anthony were twin brothers. Anthony married Ellen as you noted, and they are my great-grandparents. They had a son, Joseph A. They may have had more children who died at birth and are buried in Sterling. Joseph married Dellia Buechel, and they had 3 children: Gladys - my mother, Dorothy, and Charles. Dorothy was married first to Larry King of Sterling, then Walter Gantzert. She survived both husbands, is 95 years old, and living in an assisted living home in Sterling. She ran her own beauty salon in Sterling for many years.

Charles married Corene Brown and they had 2 daughters: Charlene and Coliss.

Gladys, Charles and Corene are all deceased.

Anthony homesteaded a farm SE of Tampico, which became a century farm.

His twin brother, William had 3 children: Elizabeth, Joseph J, and Matt. I do not know the name of William's wife.

Joseph J married Nellie Curran, and they had 5 children, one of whom was Joe Jr.
