In the history of the settling of Yorktown, there was a name mentioned, Jacob Sells. This was back in the 1800's. Does anyone know any of his current family. I was born and raised in Yorktown and am now married to a Sells.

The reference to Jacob Sells came from the 1867 book by Matson: MAP OF BUREAU COUNTY ILLINOIS WITH SKETCHES OF ITS EARLY SETTLEMENT. "In 1842, Jacob Sells, Elijah Olmsted, Daniel Davis, and Lewis H Burroughs became residents of this town. In 1846, the settlement of Yorktown was commenced." Mr Matson commonly uses the terms town and township interchangeable, so these pioneers may have settled in any part of the six-mile square township of Fairfield. I do show an E.B. Sells along the Backbone Road at the Fairfield-Greenville line..

THAT E.B.SELLS MAY BE F.B.SELLS WHICH WOULD PROBABLY BE FREDERICK BEELER SELLS, hard to tell on map. Farm not too far west of NEW BEDFORD. Sorry for confusion..

Thanks for the input Richard. Mr. Sells is also mentioned on this site in the Fairfield Township, accessed from home page Past & Present of Bureau County 1906. It is also listed in the "Yorktown History" on this site. A site-search, accessed from bottom of HOME PAGE will yield all the references to the Sells surname. A Wm. Tell Sells is buried in the TMC. ---------- Denise, Tampico Area Historical Society
