I was wondering if anyone could identify what relation Betsy WASHBURNE who married Daniel OATMAN might be any relation to Myron L. WASHBURNE there in Tampico in the last half of the 1800's, or any other connections with her. Betsy was born in Vermont abt 1808.

My mother was born in Prophetstown, IL, in 1909. I believe that location is about 14 miles from Tampico. I saw Bryan Ballowe's post 1-1-05, and will want to share information with him. George Olmstead was a pallbearer at my great-grandfather's funeral. I've got connections to others in the area GREENE, ARNETT, SIEBEN, SMITH. I have obituaries for two individuals mentioned in his post. Thanks for all your hard work making this such an interesting site that is easy to navigate.

HI.
Do you have information as to if Henry Olmstead is related to George? Sarah Oatman married Henry Olmstead and sarah was sister to my 2GGrandmother Abigail Oatman and Besty Washburne was their mother. Who are the obits of?

Here is a blurb in the Tampico Tornado Vol. XVI Saturday, June 6, 1891 , No.6 "Wm Arnett, the famed horse man of this section was a guest at Tampico Thursday"

Thank you

Bryan

I used the link on this site to IL Trails History and Genealogy (see bottom of middle column on Tampico Home page),Whiteside County, and found a biography naming Oliver Olmstead as father of George W. Olmstead. I also saw that Oatman is a searchable name on that site, but did not find the answer to your questions. The obits I have are for Orrilla Eddy Greene, and her children Horatio P. Greene, Alma Greene Smith, and Fanny Greene Olmstead. Fanny died almost 42 years of age, so perhaps George O. remarried and had other children. Fanny's obituary said she had two sons and a daughter. I knew that some of my ancestors are buried in Riverside Cemetery, Prophetstown, and found Alma Smith and her husband DK Smith are buried there. This information is on that IL Trails website, Whiteside County, Cemeteries. There is another George Olmstead buried in Riverside Cemetery, but that is a later date of birth than Fanny's husband. I hope this will help your research.

To answer Brian B's question about Henry Olmstead being related to George. Henry is George's grandfather.

Henry Olmstead, #4433 in Olmsted Family in America, d. Prophetstown.

his son, Oliver Olmstead, #5194, b. 1816

his son, George, #6658, b 9 Sep 1838, m Fannie Green

I have extensive genealogy on this branch of the family and will be glad to share.

M.L. WASHBURNE's brother was B.E. WASHBURN, who resided in Prophetstown, IL in 1892:
Tampico Tornado (all articles listed below are from The Tornado)
November 5, 1892
B.E. WASHBURNE, of Prophetstown, was a guest of his brother, M.L. WASHBURNE of this place last Thursday and Friday.

M.L. WASHBURNE's wife was, apparently, a TILDEN:
June 7, 1890
MARRIED
JACKSON-TILDEN - At the residence of the bride's sister, Mrs. M.L. WASHBURN, in Tampico, Ill, on Thursday evening, June 5th, 1890, by Rev. MORRISON, Mr. Henry E. JACKSON and Miss Nettie E. TILDEN, both of Chatsworth, Ill.

She was the daughter of William TILDEN:
January 24, 1891
William P. TILDEN, Beattie, Kan., is here visiting his daughter, Mrs. M.L. WASHBURNE. It was a great surprise to Mrs. W., for she had not seen her father for fourteen years and had not the slightest intimation that he was in these parts until she saw him.

She had a sister, Etta:
October 1, 1892
Mrs. M.L. WASHBURNE, accompanied by her sister, Miss Etta TILDEN, started on the "Q" Tuesday for Kansas, where they will visit relatives and friends for several weeks.

She had a brother, John:
October 21, 1893
John TILDEN, wife and son, of Beaty, Kan., stopped here on their way home from the World's Fair, to make a visit with Mr. WASHBURNE and family. Mr. TILDEN is a brother of Mrs. WASHBURNE.

And my ggg grandfather, Noah HOGEBOOM, purchased his house in Tampico in 1890:
November 29, 1890
N. J. HOGEBOOM & Son, have moved to town and are nearly settled in the residence purchased of M.L. WASHBURN

Also in 1890, M.L. became the Tampico Butcher:
December 6, 1890
M.L. WASHBURNE, our new butcher, is starting out as if he meant business. Last week he built a new barn at the rear end of his lot. He says he is going to paint the interior of his shop and clean up the back yard in good shape.

In 3 months later, in 1891, M.L. moved into a new residence in Tampico:
March 7, 1891
M.L. WASHBURNE changed his place of abode this week. His new home is in the WILLETT store building, Main street.

As of 1893, M.L. was still in the meat business (obviously competing with Alf. SMITH):
December 23, 1893
Our Holiday Advertisers:
W.H. GILES - Insurance
J.F. McNAUGHTON - Hotel
DeWitt WEST - Frames, Pictures
Charles F. SIPPEL - Clothing Store
Mary GLASSBURN - Toy Store
M.L. WASHBURNE - Meat Market
James H. CAIN - Carpenter
Alf. SMITH & Brother - Meat Market

It looks like M.L. and wife may have moved to Rock Falls by 1896:
March 21, 1896
Mrs. D.P. ALDRICH, L.L. GRIFFIN, Misses Niva VARIAN and Mabel GIFFORD spent Saturday and Sunday visiting friends at Rock Falls. They were entertained by Mr. and Mrs. M.L. WASHBURNE for supper Saturday.

The earliest mention I have of M.L. WASHBURNE is from the 1886 Tornado (1886 is the earliest surviving issue of the Tornado that began publishing in Tampico in the mid-1870's):
May 1, 1886
DIED. CHAMBERS - At her home in Tampico, Friday, April 23rd, 1886, Mrs. Margaret CHAMBERS: aged 67 years.
Mrs. CHAMBERS (better known as Mrs. WARREN) was apparently in moderate health, indeed she had worked hard in the garden all day on Friday, teh above date, and made calls in the evening. She remarked once that day that she had not felt so well for years. On Saturday morning the little girl who slept with her, but who, for some reason, had been excused that night, came in and found her lying on the floor; she at once made an alarm and Mr. METCALF came and found that the old lady was dead, and it was thought that she must have died about eleven o'clock the previous night.
The Coroner was notified and arrived here a little after noon and impaneled a jury consisting of the following gentlemen: Dr. A.C. SMITH, Alf. SMITH, G.F. ALLEN, E. FARLEY, J.F. LEONARD and M.L. WASHBURNE, from whose deliberations the following verdict was arrived at, that death was caused by "Failure of the heart's action, caused by valvular [sic] disease of the heart."
Mrs. CHAMBERS was an honest, quiet and hard working woman, and her sudden death caused much excitement and sorrow. A short service was held at the house on Monday morning, conducted by Rev. F. STRINGER, after which the body was taken to Walnut for internment.

I also found the following W.L. WASHBURNE article in 1886:
May 1, 1886
Dissolution Notice
The co-partnership heretofore existing under the firm name and style of PAICE & WASHBURNE, is this day dissolved by mutual consent. Mr. WASHBURNE retiring, Mr. PAICE continuing. All accounts due the firm are to be settled with Mr. PAICE, who will also pay all bills against the firm.
J.C. PAICE
W.L. WASHBURNE

I hope some of this helps.
