Charles and Mary Conklin are the parents of Sarah Jane Conklin, who was born on 2 August 1844 in Como, Illinois. Where can I find out where Charles and Mary were married, and Mary's maiden name? Mary was born in Ohio in 1812, but I have no further data on Charles. Anyone who can help me with ideas on where to search would be in my great debt. Thank you.

Family Tree of Frost, Gilchrist and Related Families Entries: 10213 Updated: 2004-11-08 20:23:08 UTC (Mon) Contact: J. Michael Frost frostinaz@cox.net
Name: Charles CONKLIN Sex: M Birth: BET 1810 AND 1820 in OH Death: BEF 1850 Note: (1) A household headed by Charles CONKLIN is listed in the 1840 census of Whiteside County, IL.
Listed in Charles' household are 1 free white male between 20 and 30 years of age; 2 free white females between 5 and 10 years of age; and 1 free white female between 20 and 30 years of age.
Since only one male is listed in Charles' household in the 1840 census, he must be the free white male listed in the 1840 census as being between 20 and 30 years of age. He was born between about 1810 and 1820, according to the 1840 census.
Assuming that Charles' wife is the free white female listed in the 1840 census as being between 20 and 30 years of age, she would have been born between 1810 and 1820, according to the 1840 census.
Assuming that the rest of the persons in John's household are children of Charles and/or his wife, those children would have consisted of two daughters [which daughters would have been born between 1830 and 1835, according to the 1840 census]. Suggested Next Step: Search OneWorldTree for: CONKLIN, Charles
Marriage 1 Mary E. SHERMAN b: ABT 1812 in OH Children Sarah Jane CONKLIN b: 2 AUG 1844 in Como, Whiteside County, IL ____________________
Name: Mary E. SHERMAN Sex: F Birth: ABT 1812 in OH Death: AFT 1880 Note: (1) A household headed by Mary CONKLIN is listed in the 1850 census of District 16, Marshall County, IA.
Mary is listed in the 1850 census as then being 38 years of age; therefore, according to the 1850 census, she was born in about 1812. According to the 1850 census, she was born in OH.
Listed with Mary CONKLIN is Mary ROGERS, who was then 18 years of age; therefore, according to the 1850 census, she was born in about 1832. According to the 1850 census, she was born in OH.
Also listed with Mary CONKLIN is her daughter, Sarah, who then 6 years of age; therefore, according to the 1850 census, she was born in about 1844. According to the 1850 census, she was born in IL.
(2) Mary BALLARD is listed in a household headed by her son, Martin BEESON, in the 1880 census of Albion Township, Marshall County, IA. [The compiler believes that Mary BALLARD was Martin BEESON's mother-in-law, rather than his mother; and that she was instead the mother of Martin's wife, Sarah Jane (CONKLIN) BEESON.]
Mary is listed in the 1880 census as then being 67 years of age; therefore, according to the 1880 census, she was born in about 1813. According to the 1880 census, she was born in OH, her father was born in VT, and her mother was born in NY. Suggested Next Step: Search OneWorldTree for: SHERMAN, Mary E.

Gwenda, Given the early dates for these births and marriages, I am not sure what information is given on documents. Generally speaking, birth and/or marriage certificates should give maiden name of mother. Do you know who Sarah married? Her birth/death/or marriage certificate should provide the information you are looking for. Another avenue is the church records. The census records give their town of residence in Iowa and Illinois. If you know their denomination, you may be able to check their archives. Many churches have web sites now, complete with instructions for genealogical research. Church records often provide more informtion than the civil records, including aliases, etc. Another source is Historical Societies, especially at the state level. OH Historical societies are wonderful and often hold many documents on the site. Their copy fees are minimal - usually much less than ordering from the Vital Stats Dept. "Google" a search for "historical society (and the town and or state you are interested in." Hope this is helpful.
