Denise, I am very interested in finding out about the parents of John Howlett(born 1825) and his wife's parents. He was married to Rahamah Ayers and they lived in Tampico according to my information.
John and Rahamah had a son named Oliver Howlett who is the father of my grandfather, Floyd Howlett. I am very interested the finding out about the parents of Oliver's wife, Bette or Betsy Newell. I know she died shortly after my grandfather, Floyd Howlett, was born in 1884. The information I have concerning her mother is very limited. I believe her name was Betsy Johnston or Johnstone and the stories passed down about her were that she was thought to be Pottawattomie Indian. I am hoping that you can tell me how to find that information.
Thank you for your help and for having this wonderful website!

There is a Johnson Family History listing Betsy Johnson/Johnston. Contact:

Entries: 56231 Updated: 2005-05-02 05:50:17 UTC (Mon) Contact: Mr. and Mrs. Burley Johnson burleyrjohnson@socal.rr.com
(They list Stormy Reiley as one of their sources)

I did notice in their chart that they have a few people listed as being from "Tampico, Greenville Twp, Bureau Co." This is a common error, I suspect derived from census records. Tampico is in WHITESIDE CO. However, just down the road a piece is Fairfield Twp and Greenville Twp in BUREAU CO. The nearest Post Office at one time was in Tampico. See our MAPS & ATLASES section (from HOME page/Main Menu)

Hi,
I hope I can just jump in here with information that I have. I was doing a search for information on my family tree and came across your question about the mother of Bettie Ann Newell Howlett.
I am a descendant of Jerome Dittimus Newell, Bettie Ann's oldest brother. The information I have is as follows (and I wish I could find more, so if anyone has any, I would appreciate it!)
Elizabeth Ann "Betsey Ann" Johnston (with a 't') was born on Jan. 29, 1827 in Brecksville, Ohio Cuyahoga Co, Brecksville Township.
She married James Monroe Newell on February 26, 1846 in Cleveland, OH by a Justice of the Peace. Two years after they were married they came to Illinois and then they returned to Ohio for a time, returning to New Bedford, Ill. Bureau Co, Greenville township in 1851.
It is said "Betsey" was often seen on her front porch in her rocker smoking her clay pipe. Betsey was half American Indian... according to 'Spike' and Chloe Howlett they believed she was of the Potawatomi Tribe.
James mustered in to the 148th IL infantry, Co 'A' on Jan. 31, 1865 at Camp Butler in Springfield, Ill for a term of one year. He died however 19 days after mustering in. Glenn King said he had been told by his father, Robert "Heidt" King, that his grandfather, James, had to stand guard one night in the cold rain and became ill and died of pneumonia.
Betsey remarried John Waterhouse on Feb. 17, 1868 (no children) and was widowed a second time on Sept. 20, 1896. Betsey died on Dec. 3, 1909 at the age of 82. She is burried at the Newell family cemetery in New Bedford, Ill in Bureau Co.
This information I recieved from my grandmother (she has been dead a long time)when she was looking up information for Daughter's of the American Revolution. I have no idea who Betsey's parents were, although I would love to know more.

Looking for more information on George William Howlett and Mary M Eves. I have children as follows: Ethiline b 1899, Albert Ross b 1900, Adith b ABT 1902, Evelyn Pearl b 1904 and Mabel b ABT 1906. Also looking for any information on George's parents, Thomas Howlett and Jane Bower. I can add to George's grandchildren/grandchildren if anyone can supply older information. I know that Thomas came to Canada from England and that George and his wife were in Ontario, but that is about all I have found on them

Thanks

My great grandfather was James Dittmus Newell son of Besty Ann Johnston and James Monroe Newell I have been doing research on the family tree and enjoyed this site. Feel free to e-mail me at ljbarb@aol.com with any questions or information you may have. Do you know if Betsy Ann was half Indian, and was it the Potawaumme tribe. This it what I have heard.
