I recently interviewed Mary Ellen (nee Terry) Gholson. Her grandfather, Charles Rufus Aldrich, built my house. All of the lumber was transported by covered wagon from Chicago, IL. He lived in it when he married in 1889, so we know it was built by then...probably a year or two before then.

Les -- I think you and I corresponded about Sarah Ellen Jones, but I'll post it here in case anyone else is interested. She was indeed the 2nd wife of Joel M. Baldwin -- you were kind enough to send me the article about their wedding.

Sarah Ellen Jones was born Feb. 1855 in Kentucky to F. Simeon Jones & Elizabeth Williams. I'm not sure when she died, but I've located her in the census as late as 1930 when she was in Pomona, CA, living with her sister, Janette Jones Loomis (married Ralph Loomis), and her step-daughter, Lizzie Farrington. I have a few postcards from them to my grandmother, Cora Roberts Venard.

F. Simeon Jones & Elizabeth Williams had 4 daughters -- the youngest of which (Frances Simona) was my great-grandmother. Janette was the eldest - b. about 1848 in Kentucky (they are in the 1850 census, Paducah, McCracken Co., KY, with Elizabeth's sister Maria living with them). Next was Mary G. Jones, b. July 1852 in KY (she married Charles Wesley Foy and stayed in Whiteside County until her death in 1943. Next was Sarah Ellen, then my great-grandmother, Frances Simona Jones. F. Simeon Jones died shortly after Frances was born according to her obituary, and soon after that, Elizabeth moved her 4 little girls to Hancock Co., IL near other family members. She remarried to Jesse Gibson Roberts and had one more daughter, Leona Estella (Stella) Roberts, before her death in about 1868 in Hancock Co. Jesse Gibson Roberts & Elizabeth Williams Jones Roberts are both buried at the Majorville Cemetery in Hancock Co., IL.

I was glad to have found this site and the information on the Tampico Memorial Cemetery. I hope one of these days to come to IL and visit some of these places.

Debra,
Hello! It's been a while since I've been in touch with you. Yes, you are correct, this is NOT your ggg grandmother (my gg grandmother) - Sarah Ellen JONES wife of Benjamin F. DOW, daughter of Parmenus & Anna nee DICKERSON JONES.
The Sarah E. JONES mentioned above was married Joel Manning BALDWIN in Princeton (1896) was the daughter of F. Simeon & Elizabeth nee WILLIAMS JONES.

I am so glad that I happened on this post! I am descended from Rufus Aldrich, b.1783 RI, who would be the grandfather of Charles Rufus Aldrich who built your house.
Rufus Aldrich came to PA with his family after rafting down the Susquehanna River. after his death the family including William, Rufus Jr, and John came to Tampico.
I am descended from William as is a third cousin of mine. we have been working on the Aldrich geneology but have hit a brick wall at Rufus the grandfather. would be delighted to correspond with any long lost cousins who have more info.

Debbie,
I am more than happy to help a cousin. One of these days I'd like to be able to get a DOW-SHERE-McKENZIE family reunion going at Tampico/Yorktown.

Well, if you are going to have a reunion with all of those wonderful family names, would you consider coordinating it with our Yorktown Cemetery Walk? AND . . . someone from each family line do a presentation? We had a nice turnout last year when we did our first YORKTOWN walk. Met at the Community Bldg. afterwards for refreshments. April Hinton and Betty Glassburn could help coordinate that. Our date for the YT walk has not been established yet, so we would open to most any date (except last weekend in June is our Tampico Homecoming/Festive Days). We have a lovely B&B in Tampico that could accomodate many out-of-towners! Pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeese?

A Dow/Shere/ McKenzie reunion! sounds wonderful to me. Coordinating with the cemetery walk would be fine with me- or in June- I am not that far away so any time would be fine. I am sure April and Betty would be a big help! Deb

My schedule varies greatly and so, in general, I can't identify a weekend that would be better than another. It is best for those who can select good weekends to line things up and if it works for me, I will be there.

Shall we wear name tags or just a picture of our oldest Yorktown relatives? Count me in -- I think it would be great fun. Connie Essig

We could always go to the cemetary. It would be nice if the ones above the ground could outnumber the one below the ground.

I think it would be great if you had a reunion for Yorktown. I for one would probably be there. I was born in Yorktown in1945 and lived there until 1966 roughly. I t would br great seeing some of my friends again.
