ANNOUNCEMENTS: FROM TERRY GASKILL: TAMPICO MEMORIAL WEEKEND ACTIVITIES 2017: Tampico American Legions puts up the flags Saturday May 27th at 8am and if anyone wants to help please be at Tampico Garage by the St. Mary’s Cemetery and BRING A SLEDGE HAMMER to pond in stakes. Many of the members are getting older and have health issues including myself so I can’t help. Hopefully the younger people will help! THE LEGION COULD USE EXTRA HELP! SUNDAY MAY 28TH AT 6AM: Put up flags if they were not put up Saturday. MONDAY MAY 29Th 10AM: Tampico American Legion Post 574 Color Guard will fire a salute at St. Mary’s Cemetery and then go to Memorial Cemetery to fire a salute after the names are read of Deceased Veterans at St. Mary’s Cemetery. Names will be read at Memorial Cemetery after the firing of the salute by the color guard. I hope to help with this as I carry the Post 574 Flag! MONDAY MAY 29TH AT 4PM: Take down flags and pull up stakes and put flags away if they are not wet. WE HOPE IT DOES NOT RAIN! Tampico's American Legion, Post 574 will line each cemetery with the "Avenue of Flags". Commander John Taets. Memorial Day Roll Call, Monday, May 29, 2017. Start in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery, Tampico at 10:00 a.m. Tampico's American Legion, Post #574, will do a gun salute. A Roll Call of the Veterans buried in that cemetery will be read. We will then proceed to the Tampico Memorial Cemetery where Tampico's American Legion, Post #574, will again provide a gun salute. The names of the Veterans buried in TMC, as well as the Veterans buried in the Yorktown Cemetery, will be read. Please join us to remember & honor them.
UPDATES: Whiteside County Genealogical Society borrowed several of our school ledgers and files on W/S country schools. They said they were able to gather a lot of information and photos. (Glad we could help!)

UPCOMING PROGRAMS - Tampico Area Historical Society meets the 4th Tuesday evening, 7:00 p.m. in the Historical Society, 119 Main Street, Tampico, IL. The program for our May 23rd meeting will be presented by Connie Schmitt Essig. She has many letters written by Evadne Kelly to her son, Dale in 1944. This will be a continuation of Connie's presentation in 2016, which was very well received and had everyone laughing & reminiscing. We hope you'll join us and bring a friend or two.
June 27, 7:00 p.m. - We will continue our histories of the area churches. Denise McLoughlin will give some history on the Tampico Methodist Church. The presentation will include not only her own personal research, but the extensive research of Mr. Roy Haney through the years. We hope you will join us - guests are always welcome.
July 25, 7:00 p.m. - TBA
August 22, 6:00 p.m., meet in Tampico Community Building - ATTENTION! Please note that we meet in a different location AND an hour earlier than usual.This is our annual "Pot Luck" meeting. Bring a dish-to-pass & your own table setting (plate(s), cup, flatware). Our program is pretty exciting and interactive (if you choose). More details to come.
